Wednesday 6/1/2008: Edgar Ramos quiets Cincinnati bats with shutout
HOUSTON - Edgar Ramos took the mound and never left. And Cincinnati hitters couldn't touch him at all. Houston's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 237 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Ramos (5-4) fanned 1 and walked 1, throwing 103 pitches. The hitting star for Houston was shortstop Brandon Phillips, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with three runs scored and driving in 2 runs. Houston scored 11 runs on 16 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2008: Los Angeles (N)'s Floyd severely injured
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s Cliff Floyd suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against San Diego. Floyd fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. Floyd was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. His season features a batting average of .293 (55 hits in 188 AB), 11 doubles, one triple and 5 longballs. Floyd collected 23 RBI and 22 runs as well.
Wednesday 6/1/2008: Toronto's Johnson earns Pitcher of the Month award
Toronto's pitcher Josh Johnson is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. He had an ERA of just 1.18 in 53.1 innings of work in which he struck out 39 hitters. His record in May is 6-0. Josh pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .200 against Josh this season. While posting an ERA of 1.68 he went 7-1 in 12 starts, fanning 63 and walking 23 hitters. He's 9th in the American League in RBIs and 6th in homeruns! The National League's best player of the month was Florida's Mike Lieberthal, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's rightfielder Edgardo Alfonzo. Alfonzo helped his team with an average of .520 and 9 RBI in 25 at bats. His season features a batting average of .264 (52 hits in 197 AB), 9 doubles, 6 triples and 11 taters. Alfonzo collected 34 RBI and 30 runs as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Nomar Garciaparra this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Nomar went 12 for 25 (.480), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Nomar has gone 47 for 157 (.299) this season, hitting 3 longballs and driving in 22 runs. He has scored 23 runs on his own.

LOS ANGELES (A) - Edgardo Alfonzo is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. In the 1st inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Tom Gorzelanny. Hit number 3 followed in the 5th inning, a triple. He had singles in the 3rd , in the 7th inning and in the 9th inning . Edgardo scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 52 hits this season, accounting for a .264 batting average. Baltimore scored 8 runs on 14 hits.
Friday 5/27/2008: Tampa Bay's Stetter out for 5-6 weeks
TAMPA BAY - When it rains, it pours. Tampa Bay's southpaw Mitch Stetter will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 4th inning. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Stetter compiled an ERA of 4.88, going 1-4 in 0 starts. He fanned 18 while giving up 25 hits in 24 innings.
