We are 54 games into the 2008 season. Just when it looked like Jeter was going to run away with the AL SB crown and record, Chipper Jones spent May reminding everyone that the record is still his.
Jeter fell from the top of the leaderboard while only mustering 10 SBs since the last Speed Report. Chipper surged with 22 thefts since our last report. Coco Crisp also blew past Jeter with a 20 steal month. Jimmy Rollins was the bigger mover of the month, he checks in at the 3rd spot for June, up from 9 in May. He rattled off 22 thefts since our last report and makes him a contender as we begin June. Castillo remains on the list but falls from 2nd to 5 as 15 stolen bases for the month definitely isn't anything to thumb your nose at, but the incredible pace at the top has him sitting in the middle of the list, but definitely within striking range.
Taveras picked up 15 steals in the last month and remains in the middle of the list. The Red Sox Pedroia climbs back onto the list after falling off in May and looks to move up the list as he is within strking range of Taveras and Castillo. Matt Holliday comes in at 8, another guy that climbed back onto the list after falling off in May. I expect Holliday to get it back in gear soon. Maybe his youth will show through as we get into the hotter months. Reese checked in at the 3rd spot in May but has fallen to 9th place in May and Furcal climbs back onto the list after missing it last month. Durham, Ichiro, and Damon fall off the June report.
Quest for Chipper's 2006 Record of 112
54 games into the season: Chipper now holds the pace at 36 steals in 54 games (66.666%) or a total of 108 bases. The lads have fallen off the pace for Chipper's 2006 record, but not far off the pace, the next couple sims could be crucial.

Over in the NL things are starting to warm up but still pretty tame compared to the AL. Podsednik and Wilson seem to be pulling away with Victorino trying to stay in the conversation. Weeks still has a chance if he were to get hot but I think the time is now as the top of the list seems to have set a sustainable pace. Podsednik had 15 SBs in the May report and 15 more for the June report. Wilson moved up from a 4 way tie, he had 12 bases for the May report and added 16 more for June. We here at Speed Reporthink that is a candidate to fade before the next report. Victorino moved up from 4th to 3rd with 13 thefts in the last month. Weeks is still my horse but an 11 steal month sets him off the pace and he remains in the 4th spot. Sanchez jumped up to a tie for 5th after being ranked 9th in May while Cedeno fell from the 2nd spot to be tied with Sanchez at 21. As soon as the weather got uncomfortable for old gus, Erstad faded from 2nd to 7th with a 7 SB month. Renteria climbs onto the list with Phillipps and Green and Perez falling off the list for Cincy. Scott Rolen continues to fight to stay on the list for Philly. He came in at #9 last month and had a 9 steal month to keep him lingering at #8.
Quest for Lou Brock's 1970 Record of 106
Through 54 games Podsednik has 30 steals for a pace of 55.555%. Through 162 games this projects to 90 SBs. The NL needs to pick up the pace a lot if Lou's record is going to fall this year.
