Phillies 2008 May Report
Record: 24-4
Home: 14-2
Road: 10-2
Positive Team Stat: ERA–2.19/OPP AVG–.200/BBs Allowed–95/Runs Allowed–135 (1st)
Notes: I usually don’t list more than one, BUT when you are leading the league in almost every pitching cat, then man we need to shine some light on that! Typically the Braves have always been the king of that, but it seems like there might be a passing of the torch moment here. The Phillies have owned the Braves this year with a 6-0 record…and it’s in large part due to these dominant ACEs. Even Radke has gotten in on the act as well. With all 5 SPs holding ERAs under 3.00 and WHIPs under 1.00…it’s literally been one of the more unprecedented seasons we’ve seen. Let’s see if these guys can continue to dominate an extremely tough national league.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Avg–.247 (22nd)
Notes: Man, we added Chooch and Hardy to help remedy this situation, and right now it’s almost as if it has gotten worse! To be fair, Hardy was dynamite this month, and we’ll touch on that in a moment, but I do need Chooch to get it going. He’s way too good not to be hitting at least .300. This is my only concern right this minute, but if my guys actually start hitting to their standards, then we will be crushing opponents even more. We’ve actually dropped a spot which is quite shocking given the absolute talent on this team. I expect the boys to get it going soon.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
Stats: .365/.426/.510/.936 OPS 9 2Bs 0 3Bs 2 HRs 11 RBIs 22 Runs 9 BBs 18 Ks
Notes: Hardy was our best hitter this month, but this seems like another month where we didn’t have a guy have an OPS over 1.000. Anyway, Hardy was doing a terrific job getting on base since our leadoff hitter Matt Kemp struggled mightily this month. Sometimes that's what it's about in baseball where your guys pick you up when you’re not having a good day or good stretch. I think this really gets Hardy going, and he shows why he won the NL MVP a season ago.
Best Pitcher: SP Brad Radke
Stats: 5 Starts 5-0 0.89 ERA 40.2 IP 24 Hs 4 ERs 5 BBs 30 Ks
Notes: Brad! NL pitcher of the month! I knew he would be solid, but he’s been downright pitching like a great #2 this year…and he’s our 5th pitcher! Radke was a guy we had our eye on, and we are glad to have secured him given we had a hole at the #5 spot for most of the offseason. Radke had a Ben Sheets like month. Seriously, it’s that impressive of a month.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: CL Jerry Blevins (AAA)
Notes: While Blevins has had struggles in the past at Triple A…this isn’t one of them. He looks like he has arrived finally. In about 40 innings, he has only given up 15 hits WHILE striking out 57 batters this season. He does have 15 walks which he will want to rein in, but he looks like a future reliever for our Philadelphia Phillies down the line…maybe as soon as next season!
