Tuesday 6/14/2008: Cleveland has no chance in a 1-hitter by A.J. Burnett
CLEVELAND - Seattle's right-hander A.J. Burnett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. Carlos Gonzalez spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 7th inning. Burnett (10-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 97 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Seattle's third baseman Adrian Beltre stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, going deep twice, with three runs scored and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Burnett. Seattle scored 11 runs on 14 hits.
Monday 6/13/2008: Player of the Week honors go to Cruz and Fullmer
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Oakland's Nelson R. Cruz this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Nelson R. went 13 for 29 (.448), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 21 RBI. Cruz has hit for a .310 average this season. He has 40 extra base hits along with 162 total bases, resulting in a .643 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Houston's first baseman Brad Fullmer had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 27 at bats he hit .556 with 0 HR and 7 RBI. Brad is hitting .278 this year, with 70 hits in 252 at bats. He has driven in 44 runs, slugging .500.
Sunday 6/12/2008: Colorado's Jose Vidro gets milestone hit
COLORADO - Jose Vidro got a standing ovation from 40269 fans in Colorado, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. With one out in the 3rd inning, Jose drilled a two run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Jose collected 338 homeruns and 1220 RBI in 11 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
Sunday 6/12/2008: Bobby Abreu uncorks five hits against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Oakland's centerfielder Bobby Abreu accomplished a difficult feat in a 13-1 win over New York (A), drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .254! A RBI double off Glendon Rusch in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Glendon Rusch in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in center field. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Rocky Cherry. He had singles in the 6th and in the 6th (one RBI). Bobby did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .277. Oakland improved its record to 34-32, scoring 13 runs on 20 hits.
Friday 6/10/2008: Kelvim Escobar shuts out San Diego on one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Kelvim Escobar had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 201 games started. Escobar (6-5) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 118 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' San Francisco's second baseman Jim Thome finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once, stroking a double, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Escobar. San Francisco improved its record to 39-24, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits.
Thursday 6/9/2008: Los Angeles (N)'s Koyie Hill pounds five hits
CINCINNATI - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Los Angeles (N)'s catcher Koyie Hill after the 13-0 win over Cincinnati. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Daisuke Matsuzaka in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 428 feet from home plate. His 3rd hit, a three-run homerun off Terry Adams in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in right field. He had singles in the 4th , in the 8th and in the 9th inning . Koyie scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 42 hits this season, accounting for a .251 batting average.
