Wednesday 7/20/2008: New York (N)'s Felipe Lopez mashes seven hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - 'Wow, seven hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said New York (N)'s shortstop Felipe Lopez after the 18-3 win over Los Angeles (N). Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a double. A 379 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Ray King in the 5th inning. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Jack Taschner in the 6th inning. Number 5 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 421 feet, cleared the wall in left field. He had singles in the 3rd inning (one RBI) , in the 8th and in the 9th . Felipe scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He now has a total of 102 hits this season, accounting for a .254 batting average.
Wednesday 7/20/2008: Chipper Jones ropes 3000th career hit
DETROIT - Detroit's Chipper Jones showed a smile on his face after he got his 3000th career hit against Kansas City on Wednesday. His best year so far was 1999 where he hit .350 with 45 homeruns and 125 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Luis Ayala. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Wednesday 7/20/2008: Bengie Molina collects 2000th hit against Kansas City
DETROIT - Detroit's players had every reason to congratulate Bengie Molina, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Bengie collected 166 homeruns and 997 RBI in 10 seasons. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' With two outs in the 6th inning, Bengie drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Tuesday 7/19/2008: Arizona's Rhodes out for 6 weeks
ARIZONA - Arizona's left-hander Arthur Rhodes suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep Tendon which will require surgery. This season Rhodes compiled an ERA of 4.38, going 6-5 in 19 starts. He fanned 128 while giving up 89 hits in 109 innings.
Monday 7/18/2008: Atlanta's Lee wins Player of the Week award
Adrian Gonzalez from Oakland wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .556 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.167 in 18 at bats. Carlos Lee from Atlanta wins his 8th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Lee helped his team with an average of .600 and 9 RBI in 20 at bats.
Saturday 7/16/2008: Robinson Cano out for 4 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's second baseman Robinson Cano suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from St. Louis' Bronson Arroyo. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Cano will probaby miss 4 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Jaw which will require surgery. He has hit 17 longballs while batting .228 this season. His 77 hits and 28 walks add up to a .299 on-base percentage.
Saturday 7/16/2008: Colorado's Davis out for 5-6 weeks
COLORADO - Colorado's right-hander Wade Davis suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Colorado wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Davis had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. In 0 starts this year Wade struck out 37 batters in 35.2 innings of work. His ERA is 6.56, his record 3-4.
Wednesday 7/13/2008: Troy Tulowitzki collects five hits against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Troy Tulowitzki is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 4th hit, off Francisco Cordova in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Matt Mantei.
