We are combining the trade deadline sim with the August sim to give Chris's clicking finger a break. We pick up on the 28th. The team had won on the 27th and Kenny Powers has recovered from a hangover. Let's see what happened.
7/28
A 5 run 3rd inning sealed Hebson's fate as Kenny Powers knocked him out of the game, literally, with a right handed haymaker, and yelled to the SF crowd, "How much y'all give me if I slam dunk this thing into the trash can." Thankfully, Miguel Tejada intervened as KP was dragging Hebson off the field. Dexter Fowler Tweeted shortly after the events unfolded, "That was entertaining, ya'll." While the AAA squad might be having fun now, this is what they will be walking into if Jamieson doesn't get the reigns on KP soon. Pittsburgh starts a new losing streak.
7/29
As expected the team handed down a 1 game suspension to KP. When asked why it was only another 1 game suspension, Jamieson said, "KP said that Hebson started it and he was acting in self defense. Obviously, we can't have things escalating to a physical altercation, so I suspended him for a game." For the 4th (I think) in his short time with the Pirates, the team took the field without their skipper. Dontrelle Willis got the call to face former Pirate Carlos Villanueva and the Cardinals. It was the duel that everyone hope for when they came in and the home fans left happy as Willis gave up 1 run through 7 and Villanueva gave up 2 through 8. After Pittsburgh's 2-1 win, Villanueva said, "We almost had them tonight. A lot of almosts recently. I hear I almost ended up in Pittsburgh but a couple of three way deals fell apart. Almost."
Pittsburgh took the lead in the first with a Nieves 2 run HR and the Pirate pirate staff was excellent giving up only the single run in the 5th. Pirates go to 1-1 on the 'sim' and 1-0 for the STL series.
7/30
Kenny Powers returned to the team seemingly remorseful as he and Hebson were seen horse playing before the game. All seemed well as Dreifort pitched well and everyone was getting along. For the second consecutive day, the Pirates out dueled a St. Louis ace that use to sit in the other dugout. Dreifort gave up 3 runs over 7 innings and Cliff Lee gave up 4 over 8. Pirates win 4-3 with Mantei getting the win with 2 innings of scoreless relief work. Once again, winning seems to be the solution to the Kenny Powers problem. Isn't that what he said since the beginning? Pirates have a little 2 game winning streak going headed into the trade deadline.
7/31
The trade deadline is always a fun day. Pittsburgh was relatively quiet this year, but rumors ran rampant. As mentioned by Villanueva after the opening game of the series, he was a target as well as rumors of an offer to Andrew McCutchen. The fan base was pulling hard for a McCutchen deal, but it never materialized. However, the Pirates did make a move right before the clock hit midnight, that brought one of the top pitching prospects in the league to Pittsburgh. Cory Wade will spend the rest of the 08 season in AAA as per the terms of the deal, but Pirate fans are already talking about ROY and Cy Young for the 25 year old starter.
As the news broke about the trade, the Pirates were getting ready to take the field against the Mets in Pittsburgh and the air was electric. Franklyn German fed off the energy as he got an early 2-0 lead off a Nieves HR and dominated as he continues to audition for a starting roll next year with his 6th consecutive start, giving up only 1 run in 7.1 innings. Cordova picked up the save to extend the Pirate winning streak to 3.

Game two didn't go as swimmingly for Pittsburgh . The Mets scored 3 in the 6th and added 2 more in the 9th, even though it didn't matter after the 1st run. Kintzler got the W with Benoit getting the final 2 outs of the shutout. Mets win game 2 5-0. Of course Kenny Powers was thrown out of the loss, sort of. He got thrown out after the game for "inappropriate behavior" after the game. There are no reports that Pittsburgh has issued any discipline at this time.
8/2
Hebson pitched well for 8 innings, and Kenny Powers took full credit for it. Pittsburgh 8 game extra inning losing streak came to an end in this one, and there doesn't seem to have been enough time for KP to get into trouble as the Mets win this one 2-1 in the 11th. While KP's behavior wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination, the league seems to have compromised that bad behavior is better than terrible behavior. I believe that this is the first loss that Kp hasn't been thrown out of. Mattes gives up the late run to get tagged with the loss. Pittsburgh's losing streak extends to 2 games. Mets take the series, 2-1.
8/3
Pittsburgh headed south to ATL trying to get things turned around. Dontrelle Willis had been pitching well enough recently to give them some hope but got bombed in this one for 8 ER in 5 innings as the Pirates drop their 3rd straight. KP did get thrown out of this one after refusing to talk to Dontrelle Willis during a mound visit but refusing to leave at the prompting of home plate umpire, Jerry Meals, "because he hadn't made a mound visit if he hadn't talked to his pitcher." Meals wasn't having anything to do with it before tossing KP in the middle of the terrible 5th. It made no difference as the offense continued to be terrible and the bullpen found it's early season form giving up 3 more runs for a grand total of 11, if you are keeping track. Pittsburgh losing streak extends to 3.
8/4
Even winning couldn't keep Kenny Powers from racking up another team suspension as he ran around the ATL ballpark completely nude, overshadowing the 3-2 win as Dreifort turned in another solid pitching performance. However, the only lights on SportsCenter were low as they replayed KP taking the 3 nude victory laps, one for each run they scored, while doing the Tomahawk Chop. Eventually the chaos ended with KP urinating in the 3rd base coach's box before team owner Jamieson ushered him off the field. Dexter Fowler posted the SC clip with #ThatIsMyCoach. Pittsburgh ends their 3 game skid.
8/5
RA Dickey had it going against Franklyn German as he out dueld the Pirate starter to get the 2-1 win. Valverde go the final two outs for the Braves and they take the series lead 2-1. KP was not at the game today. While the team has said they did not ban him for his antics after game two of the series, the rumors are swirling that KP has been banned from Atlanta. Not from the stadium.... from the city. Some rumors say that there are Brave fans taking the issue all the way to the State House to have him banned from Georgia. We will let you know if anything develops on that front.
8/6
The Pirates were hoping to split the series but faced the legend, John Smoltz. Brian Anderson wasn't terrible but could not take advantage of the Pirates 1st inning 1-0 lead. Atlanta tied it in the 2nd and scored 3 in the late innings to take an easy 4-1 win, and a 3-1 series as the Pirate losing streak starts again at 2. Once again Kenny Powers was not in the stadium as fans look to the Braves owner for comment.
The Pirates traded away their first round pick. If you want to see where our pick would fall, do the math lol.
