The Pirates enter August with a lot of mayhem at the major league level, much of it induced by the Promotion Rebellion. However, things continue to shine in the minors as the Pirates have built the #1 minor league system in the land. We figured we would change it up a little bit in this report and do a top 10 prospect report.
#1
Dexter Fowler caused quite the stir this week by releasing the emails that connected Joe Price with the Promotion Rebellion. While Jason Heyward got traded for his roll, Dexter Fowler has come away smelling like roses and continues to hit .323 in AAA to bolster his argument for promotion. He seems to have come to terms with staying in AAA for the rest of the season but it remains to be seen whether Twitter becomes and issue with Pirate management.
#2
Julio Teheran comes in as the Pirates #2 ranked prospect but continues to struggle in AAA. However, his current 12 ERA would have him competing for a job at the ML level but he is still likely 3 seasons away from being ready, at the very earliest.
#3
New arrival Cory Wade comes in at #3 on the Pirates list but #2 in the league overall. Someone is going to have to explain that one to me. He arrives in AAA ready for the big leagues and as we have reported several times already, appears set to come up with Kroenke next year.
#4
Zach Kroenke has been on and off the DL this year but Pittsburgh thinks they have a core starter here. With his Brilliants in walks and homers he looks to be competing for the number 1 job in the few seasons. The popular belief is that he will be a 2009 ST invite.
#5
17 Eugenio Surez continues to play well at the AA level hitting .324 with 28 HRs. He looks poised to get promoted to AAA during the off season and his time table to arrive in the Majors is probably similar to Teherans.
#6
Mark Trumbo was another big time name from the Promotion Rebellion. He comes in at number 6 and is absolutely on fire in AAA hitting .301 with 50 HR and 157 RBIs. If these are the numbers Pirate fans can expect in the future, they should be jacked. Mark looks likely to be a 2009 ST invitee.
#7
Elliott Johnson could be a number 2 hitter behind Fowler or he could be a #6 hitter putting some speed in the lineup behind Trumbo and company. We will see how it plays out when he gets to the majors but he looks like he could be a 2009 ST invitee as well.
#8
22 yo Andy Dirks has absolutely exploded during the 2008 season. While he still appears to be at least 2 seasons away but he should have a lock on LF.
#9 and #10
Howell and Broadway represent the new bullpen that the Pirates have ready to promote in 2009. Of course there will be a ML adjustment curve but Howell and Broadway look to be just about ready to lead the next generation of Pittsburgh relievers.
The biggest development focus for Pittsburgh in the last 1/3rd of the season will be replacing Heyward. Lorenzo Cain seems to be the most likely candidate as he just had a talent dump reversed. Watch for his development as we move towards September callups. Will there be any September callups? Jamieson is not a big fan of September callups, much for the same reason that KP isn't a fan of his, he is a cheap b------.
