Phillies 2008 Trade Deadline
The Phillies typically will make a move for a veteran come trade deadline time if they think the team can make a serious run. This year was no exception! They also made some minor moves in addition as well. Let’s break it down!
MR Nick Christiani
Phi gets:
OF Larry Walker
Pending commish review but I’ll just post here…probably better for Wash to get off that money than not
Verdict: The Phillies have an awesome lineup 1-7. Absolutely stacked with guys who hit for average, get on base, hit dingers, and steal bases. The last 2 spots aren’t great, but the DH spot was certainly the club’s biggest weakness. They’ve addressed that hole with acquiring Larry Walker. The Nats who had a pretty massive payroll and weren’t going to sniff the playoffs decided to move on, and didn’t even ask for anything given the market for Larry Walker’s contract. This seemed like a no brainer for both clubs at this point…especially the Phillies who are trying to give themselves the absolute best chance at getting another title here. The short-term returns haven’t been good as Mr. Walker broke his hand, and will pretty much miss the remainder of the regular season. The good thing is, he will be ready for the playoffs as he tries to win his first championship with the squad. Needless to say, Larry Walker will be extremely motivated.
Verdict: For the Phillies, they signed Kile before knowing they would land Brad Radke from the Twins. He was always just insurance, and sometimes with insurance, it can become a waste. For the Phillies, they wanted to get off his money since 1) they’re pretty much locked into a playoff spot and 2) they would be fine with their current five starters for the remainder of the season. This also accomplished a “frenzy trade” which helps the team acquire points. Win-win for both as Greeme was ultimately the GM that came swooping in!
Verdict: This wasn’t a frenzy trade, but once again another maneuver to try to get off as much salary that the Phillies organization didn’t particularly need, so Larry Walker doesn’t put them too much over the top. The Phillies organization has always prided themselves on trying to be financially smart and compliant. Their payroll while competing has never gone over the $100M plateau. That’s on purpose, but they realize that they probably will go over that as soon as next season because their core guys are starting to get more expensive as they continue to age and are up for new contracts. As for Mark, he gets a relatively solid reliever for nothing, and that always seems to be good business if you ask me!
All in all, we would say this is a successful trade deadline for our Phillies!
