Thursday 9/15/2008: Los Angeles (A)'s Breslow out for 6-7 weeks
LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A) is without its left-hander Craig Breslow for at least 6-7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Shawn Wooten in a game against Texas. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .206 against Craig this season. While posting an ERA of 5.74 he went 6-6 in 0 starts, fanning 53 and walking 110 hitters.
Wednesday 9/14/2008: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Pedro Martinez
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Pedro Martinez is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Martinez 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 31st shutouts in his career. Martinez (14-5) struck out 9 and issued 1 BB, throwing 72 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Aaron Boone provided Atlanta with the offense Martinez needed as he went 2 for 3, and driving in 2 runs. Atlanta scored 8 runs on 13 hits.
Wednesday 9/14/2008: Oakland's Cruz severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's Nelson R. Cruz suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against Tampa Bay. Cruz fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. Oakland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Cruz had suffered a Broken Foot. Cruz has hit 37 taters this year while batting .273. He adds 40 doubles, along with 106 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!
Tuesday 9/13/2008: Victor Martinez clubs five hits in a game
NEW YORK (A) - Kansas City's catcher Victor Martinez once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up New York (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. A 313 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Rocky Cherry in the 2nd inning. His 3rd hit was a RBI double off Rocky Cherry in the 4th inning. His 4th hit was a double off Michael Tejera in the 8th inning. He collected a single Victor did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .292. The final score of the game was 14-2.
Monday 9/12/2008: Jeff *Bennett out for full season
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Jeff *Bennett experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 6th inning of the game against New York (N), *Bennett complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Milwaukee wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that *Bennett had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 6.64 helped him to a 5-2 record this year. He struck out 81 and walked 62 in 62.1 innings.
Monday 9/12/2008: Chicago (N)'s Beltran wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Chipper Jones, who wins the award for the 12th time in his career. He hit .440 with 14 RBI and slugged .800 in 25 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 13 game hitting streak right now. While compiling an on base percentage of .446, Chipper hit .362 and slugged .627. He has collected 159 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Carlos Beltran from Chicago (N) wins his 6th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 25 at bats he hit .320 with 4 HR and 13 RBI.
Thursday 9/8/2008: Jim Edmonds nabs six hits against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Jim Edmonds hits 'em where they ain't. Minnesota certainly agrees as Detroit's designated hitter unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Matt Hensley in the 7th inning. A pitch from Matt Hensley in the 9th inning left his bat for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 2nd , in the 3rd (two RBIs) , in the 5th inning and in the 8th . Jim did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 6 hit performance increases his batting average to .251. Detroit scored 27 runs on 28 hits.
