Phillies 2008 Postseason Report
Record: 11-5
Home: 7-2
Road: 4-3
Offense: 87 Runs (5.4/Game)
Notes: What more can you say, but this offense truly did improve this season after one of the more frustrating seasons I’ve ever had. We added guys like Hardy and Chooch and Matsui and Walker…and look at the difference. This team went up against some great pitching, and it didn’t even matter. As loaded as it gets, but this team also fields at an extremely high level, too. I just simply can’t say enough about these bats.
Pitching: 39 Runs (2.47 ERA)
Notes: We decided to roll with Ben Sheets, Cole Hamels, and Chris Young. We put John Thomson in the bullpen who only got one inning of work, and let’s just say it wasn’t that productive. Anyway, Ben Sheets was as usual brilliant…somehow even better than his Cy Young season. Cole Hamels had a 2.43 ERA. His starts were interesting because he had three absolutely stellar stars, and two that were pretty bad. With Chris Young he was much more consistent than Cole Hamels, and really delivered us some big starts in some big games. I was truly impressed with him. Chad Cordero and Mike Adams were great when they did need to be called upon…which let’s be real here…it’s not easy dominating when you’re not getting into the games consistently. Either way, this was the best pitching staff all year by a country mile, and it continued that way into another championship run. Special stuff.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 2B Chase Utley
Playoff Stats: .304/.391/.679/1.069 OPS 7 2Bs 1 3Bs 4 HRs 11 RBIs 14 Runs 4 BBs 5 Ks
Notes: Chase Utley…YOU ARE THE MAN! He really did deliver in the biggest of moments, and he was clearly our best overall hitter during the playoffs. Absolutely dynamite in all facets of the game. Whether that was hitting the ball in the gaps, hitting it out, stealing, or making great plays in the field! One of our truly best trades we will ever make here. We wanted him badly, we gave up a good bit, and we got our guy to come to a city where he absolutely belongs. He now has another ring to add to his collection. Big time stuff here.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
Playoff Stats: 6 Starts 5-1 1.06 ERA 51 IP 27 Hs 6 ERs 6 BBs 38 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets is just simply something else man. He absolutely dominated this postseason like he did the other one before getting injured. I mean a 1.06 ERA in 51 innings pitched? 51 innings in 6 starts? He pretty much went the distance. I don’t even know why I pay my bullpen anything when this guy simply just gets it done. Absolute stud. He’s easily the best pitcher here…it’s simply not even close. The lone game he lost was 2-1. I mean, man, what a goddamn pitcher. He’s going to go down as one of the true all time greats. Hard to imagine I’ll ever deal this man, but I’m sure that day could come…and that would be a sad one. Until now, let’s enjoy his sheer greatness!
