Braves 2009 Preview The Batters
Infielders
C Miguel Ojeda: Ojeda is one of the best players in the entire league and could be thee best Catcher there is. At 34 he is starting to get a little long in the tooth, and the Braves need to start looking for a replacement for him. Last season he hit 20 points lower than his career average and had the fewest HR since 2002.
1B Kevin Barker: Kevin hit 43 points lower than his career avg last season, and many are wondering if the FA Shawn Green should be the 1st baseman over Keven. Kevin has always be a defensive stud and will protect the 1st base line for the pitching staff.
2B Argenis Reyes: The youngster Reyes will take over for the venerable Aaron Boone. This is in part because Boone hit 51 points lower than his career avg last season, and in part because Skip wants to get Reyes speed out there now.
3B Edgar Renteria: Another underachiever last season, Edgar hit 41 points below his avg. The Braves are hopping his hitting rebounds from the abysmal 2008 season.
SS Alex Sanchez: Gold Glove SS Alex is back making sure Braves don’t give up seeing eye singles on the left side. Add in his power and speed and he might be the best SS in the league. The Braves are hoping he will improve on his 74 steals and 24 dingers. He has the potential to join the 30/30 group.
The Outfield
LF Carlos "El Caballo" Lee: Carlos was brought in last season to play DH and give the bats some pop. He repaid Atlanta’s massive contract by hitting 53 points lower than his career avg, but did nail a respectable 30 dingers. He is moving to LF due to the retirement of Sherman Obando.
CF Roger Cedeno: Roger hit 26 points lower than career avg last season, and the Braves are hoping he will turn that around. He came short on the 30/30 club hitting just 29 dingers to go with his 60 plus swipes.
RF Timo Perez: Timo looks like he will finally be starting after being traded to the Braves a couple seasons ago.
Time will tell if the team will rebound from its abysmal hitting of 2008.
