The Pittsburgh war room is normally buzzing on Draft Day but this year it was unusually quiet. The team traded off their draft picks to land SP Wade so they weren't looking to add to the back end of the talent pool, but instead looked to add pieces that can help the team compete while they transition to the younger core.
The Pirates went looking for a veteran pitcher to help ease the transition to the majors for Wade and Kroenke. The organization is hoping that Miguel Ascencio can be that guy, likely pushing Willis to the bullpen and German to AAA.
All signs are pointing to Trumbo, Fowler, and Johnson staying in the minors for at least part of the year so the team went out and got 1B/terrible outfielder Richie Sexson. The team has signaled that the outfield will be Erstadt in center for one more season, Sexson and Butler in LF and RF respectively. Nieves will slide to the DH slot.
We felt like we needed to add one more big bat to truly have the lineup ready for the Big 3 next year so we went out and traded future pieces for 1B Justin Morneau, 3B Lieberthal, Brad Penny, and a couple of relievers. Penny seems destined to work out of the bullpen with the starting rotation being Anderson, Hebson, Ascencio, Wade, and Kroenke. Lieberthal will get most starts at 3rd but may DH when he needs down time. Morneau will be the every day 1st baseman, making it likely that we will see some points invested in Trumbo's OF defensive abilities.
After last year's record tying terrible season, the Pirates look poised to rebound and a +.500 season does not seem all that impossible. The roster is set and the Pirates are already looking forward to Spring Training. Maybe we will do an individual player profile each day while we wait for you all to do what you need to do.
