The Caveman
Don Robinson, drafted in 1976 by outgoing GM Dougie was elected to the Hall of Fame. Don spent his entire career in Atlanta, and towards the end he only had one goal, getting to 300 wins, sadly he came up short on that, but that did not diminish his legendary career.
His early life had him playing little league ball in Ashland Kentucky he was drafted straight out of Ceredo-Kenova HS (Kenova, WV). He picked up the nickname “the Caveman” at some point ant that stuck for his entire career.
In 1980 the Braves brought him up from the minors to be part of their rotation, and he went on to win the Rookie of the Year award going 18 and 10 with a 3.11 ERA.
Don never had overwhelming speed on his fastball, but he knew how to get hitters to hit at the infielders. Constantly logging over 250 innings he had five straight seasons giving up less that two runs per 9, and six season total with a sub 2 ERA.
In 1985 he had his most dominating season, going 24 and 5 with a 1.68 ERA picking up his only Cy Yong award. In 92 he picked up one of the few Perfect games in HOFFBL history.
Also notable is he was selected to the All Star game five times for the Braves. He was also there for the first seven of the Braves World Series appearances, and he got 4 rings out of them.
Please Join the entire Atlanta staff in congratulating Don on his Hall induction.
