37 games into the 2009 season, it is time for the first Need For Speed report of 2009.
After putting up 71 stolen bases in 2008, Willy Taveras comes out of the gate on fire with 24 stolen bases out of the gate. Juan Pierre comes in 3 thefts behind him as he and Chipper try to keep the hot pace, reminiscent of Jeter a year ago. Jeter comes in at 4th with Rollins, Furcal, Holliday Guttierrez, Gordon, and Branyann all within 5 stolen bases of each other as they look to try to keep pace with the 20 stolen base club through the first month. Detroit has 3 thieves on the top 10 list with Toronto recording 2 for the first report of 2009.
Quest for Chipper's 2006 Record of 112
24 stolen bases in 37 games puts Taveras on pace of 64% or a pace for 104 steals. It is a nice start but someone needs to mash the gas pedal to get to the record.

NL SB List
The NL once again gets off to a slower start than the AL but the race looks tight. Ryes and Victorino come in tied at the top with 15 bases. Perez, Utley, and personal favorite Figgins come in a base behind. Podsednik and Sanchez come in 2 bases off of the lead at 14 and Free and Pagan are only 4 bases off the lead. Gardner comes in at 10th with 10 steals. Any of these guys could be sitting at the top of the list next month.
Quest for Lou Brock's 1970 Record of 106
15 steals in the first 37 games isn't worth calculating as far as the record pursuit goes. Pick up the pace!
