Braves 5/25
May is the time of year now Braves fans, to continue coming back to the ballpark (Atlanta Fulton County ballpark to be specific) where you can be part of sixty five thousand screaming fans to root on the Braves. Of course everyone knows we’re talking about being in Georgia!
This week the games went like this:
5/18 the first game of the week was the last game of the Brewer series and the Braves were hoping for a sweep. Bud Smith was sent to the mound to achieve it, and he came within an inning of a complete game shut out, unfortunately in the bottom of the 9th he gave up two runs ruining his bid. Sanchez swiped two bases during the game to give him 22 on the season.
5/20 After a day off the Braves were now found in Cincinnati to play the Reds for a three game series. Game one Smoltz went out and really stunk up the place giving up 6 runs in 6.2 innings. Strickland came in and got an out in the 7th and one in the 8th, and that was enough for him to get the win as in the top of the 8th the Braves scored 3 to edge up 7 to 6. Barker parked a Homer to drive in the 3 Valverde came in to close it out and he got his league leading 17th save.
5/21 Game two of the Reds series had Rupe on the mound. He Lasted to the 8th before giving way to Hanarahan. He got an out and then the Skipper called on Valverde to com in for the last out of the 8th. Thank fully the Braves were up by two as the Reds struck for a run in the bottom of the 9th, however Valverde got out of trouble and got his league leading 18th save. The run he gave up was only his 3rd on the season. Sanchez picked up two swipes on the basepath to now have 24 on the season.
5/22 Game three of the Reds series and the Braves were smelling another sweep. What happened next was a feeding frenzy as in the top of the 3rd with the game oh to oh, the Braves struck for 5 in route to a 11 to nothin drubbin. Shawn Green sent 3 over the fence, Cendeno sent two and Sanchez added one more for good measure. RA Dickey got the complete game shutout for his 3rd win of the season. Sweep completed.
5/23 Finally the Braves were back home, however it was to face the the West leading DBacks. Pedro with his 8 and 2 record took the mound confident that with a complete sell out of the stadium thanks to the bat day promotion. What happened next was not pretty for Braves fans. Pedro got pounded giving up 6 runs on 13 hits, including 2 dingers. Now the Braves offense was efficient as they scored a run for every hit they had, unfortunately they only had one hit. Sanchez got a steal to extend his lead in steals to 25 to Reyes’ only 23.
5/24 The Braves had glove day going on, and were hoping for an improvement over the day before. Bud Smith was called on to stop the bleeding and went the distance for a 7 to 2 win.
For the week the Braves went six and one, and the Phillies were also 6 and 1, and the Braves are one up on them in the East still. The Braves have been doing quite well since the first two weeks of the season, and now are 4th in the NL in runs scored, and 3rd in the NL in runs allowed. For the Month of May the Braves are now 18 and 5 which is pretty good since they started the month one and four.
