The Pirates continue to linger a game out of last place and are losing ground on the first place Cardinals, rapidly. Let's see how the last full sim of May went.
5/18
After splitting the first two games of the series in Houston, the Pirates sent Bryan Hebson to the mound to try to get the series win. Hebson. Houston countered with Matt Childers. The starting pitching dazzled on both sides as both pitchers dueled for 7.2 innings, Hebson giving up a run on a Phillips RBI double in the 6th and Childers gave up a run in the 5th after Infante drove in Flores.
Both pitchers turned the games over to their pens in the 8th inning. Mantei went 3 innings giving up an unearned run after Broadway gave up the walk off hit to JD Drew. Childers didn't get the win but he did get the POG. Astros win the game 2-1 to take the series 2-1, Pirates drop to 0-1 on the series dashing any dreams of a season changing winning streak.
Hebson gets the no decision and continues to search for his first win of the season. Morneau went 1-5, hopefully the signs of his bat starting to wake up.

Pirates have a day off after the tough series loss to Houston

Looking to try to get things going, the pirates had a tough road trip to the Arizona desert to face the NL West leading, DBacks. German turned in his 3rd crap start in a row, giving up 6 runs before the end of the 3rd. The bullpen was solid with Mike Broadway giving up the only other run until the defense disappeared in the 8th, costing CJ Wilson 3 unearned runs.
The Pirate offense was ok, scoring 6 runs, but they couldn't overcome the starting performance and lose 10-6. Sexson hit his 7th HR of the year, Erstad got stolen base #16 and Morneau got a hit in his second straight game to breath some more hope into Pirate Nation.
Pirate drop game 1 in Arizona and fall to 0-2 on the sim.

Pittsburgh came out in game two to prove they could play with the big dogs. Rookie sensation Cory Wade was on the mound for his biggest test since his debut in Atlanta. The kid was absolutely spectacular, throwing a complete game 2 hit shutout. Deservingly, he got the POG and improves to 5-1 for the season.
Of course the bats showed up to support the youngster, hopefully they saved some of those runs for Kroenke's next start. Sexson hit a HR, Lieberthal hit 2 but it wasn't enough to steal the POG from Wade, and Hietpas added a solo shot in the 8th. Erstad got SB #17, orneau extends his hitting streak to 3, I think that is a sign that his bat is back.
Pirates win easily 8-0 and improve to 1-1 for the Arizona series and 1-2 for the sim.

Pittsburgh woke up looking for a series win and Arizona showed up determined not to lose a series to the bottom feeding Pirates. The lack of run support was an issue, but not the issue for Kroenke as he got knocked out of the start in the 3rd inning, giving up 6 or more runs for his 3rd consecutive start. He falls to 0-8 for the season and the hunt for his 1st career win, continues.
After the game Jamieson addressed the rookie's struggles, "There are going to be growing pains for most youngsters. Wade is holding his own in the #4 spot and thriving, that isn't the normal standard. Kroenke will be fine and we are going to stick with him."
Arizona wins 8-2 and Pittsburgh loses the series 1-2 and falls to 1-3 for the sim.

Headed home, the Pirates had a good opportunity to win some games with Cincinnati coming to town and the rotation flipping over again. Brian Anderson pitched into the 9th after giving up a 6th run double to Escobar, scoring Jason Varitek. That was enough runs to get the job done as Shields went 8.1, as well and League got the 2 out save.
A disappointing loss as the the top of the Pirates' lineup went 1-12, with Morneau going hitless. Sexson and Lieberthal tried to get things going in the middle of the lineup but couldn't find the big hits. Cincy wins game 1 by a score of 1-0 and the Pirates fall to 1-4 for the sim.
5/24
Spoiler alert! Hebson gets his first win of 2009! Giving up 2 runs over 8.1, the Pirate bats show up for him. Morneau hit his 7th homerun of the year and Nieves added his 5th, going 1-4. The experts thought that was deserving of POG, over Hebson. Robbery. Pirates win game 2, convincingly, 7-3 to set up a rubber game on the 25th. Pirates finish the sim 2-4 to drop to 19 games off the division lead.
The bullpen has slowly improved. With everyone having ERA's under 4, Bob Howry really stands out and fans are wondering how long will it be before Britton is called up to replace him. German will not be in the rotation after his last few starts. We were hopefull after his 2009 debut but it soured quickly. We haven't decided who will get the next start at #3 but it won't be him.
Fans are expecting information to drop today about the Pirates June 1 trade list.
