Braves 6/9
June is the time of year now Braves fans, to continue coming back to the ballpark (Atlanta Fulton County ballpark to be specific) where you can be part of sixty five thousand screaming fans to root on the Braves. Of course everyone knows we’re talking about being in Georgia!
This week the games went like this:
6/2 The last game of the Cards series and neither starter got a win. Pedro went 7 and 2/3rds giving up just a rin, but the Braves didn’t score the winning run till the bottom of the 9th, after tying the game up in the 7th. The Braves were two for two in swipes as Green and Renteria both got a free base through steals.
6/3 The start of the pivotal series against the Phillies and Bud Smith decided to show up and remind everyone he won the Cy Young 2 seasons ago, shutting down the potent Phillies bats and held them to just one hit, and he picked up a complete game shutout in the process. This was Buds 8th win on the season. Shawn Green belted his 13th HR of the season in the win.
6/4 Whoa not sure what happened here, but the Braves and the Phillies bats exploded and the number 1 and 4 pitching staffs in the league took the night off. 24 runs and 30 hits combined, if you are into action this was the game to watch. Braves only had two dingers but just victimized the Phillies catcher Bailey on the basepaths going 7 for 7 in steals. Sanchez got one to increase his NL lead to 30, but Reyes got three to now be just one back from Sanchez.
6/5 The Braves luck finally ran out and Rupe took it on the chin giving up five runs dropping his record to 8 an 2. Only thing notable for the Braves was Reyes got a steal and now is tied with Sanchez for the NL lead.
6/6 The Marlins came to town and game one, Martinez took the mound. And for the second straight game he got no decision. Again going 7 and 2/3rds he gave up three, and again the Braves scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. Asked about his chase to 300 wins post game he replied “All that matters is that the team wins, if I get to 300, I get there, if not I am still one of the greatest pitchers ever and that is all that matters”. The Braves hit one dinger and Reyes got two steals to take over sole positions of 1st in the NL with 32 steals.
6/7 Game two of the Marlin series and Bud Smith got the Pedro treatment. Bud went 9 innings only giving up a single run, but the Braves scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. The Braves didn’t help themselves erasing two hits by getting caught stealing, but sometimes that happens when you are built for speed. The fact the Marlins had 3 errors and the Braves only got one run out of them says a lot about this young Marlins team.
6/8 Game three and going for the sweep, the Braves thought the win would be automatic, but the gritty young Marlins were not just going to roll over. Smoltz got tagged for 4 runs and picked up the loss and is now 6 and 5 on the season.
For the week the Braves went five and two, and the Phillies were also 5 and 2, and the Braves are one up on them in the East still. The Braves have been doing quite well since the first two weeks of the season, and now are 4th in the NL in runs scored, and 3rd in the NL in runs allowed. For the Month of June, the Braves are now 6 and 2.
Saw Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn on Jeff’s Guitar Shop tour. Was a couple weeks before Stevie died. A coworker graciously took me and was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever seen. This is my favorite song off of Guitar shop, gives me goosebumps.
