We took a one day vacation from writing about losing and the world didn't end. We are back today with more optimism to see what happened during the 6/2 double sim. We honestly haven't even looked at the results yet, we just know there are a lot of Ls. We will pick up with the 6/8 game.
6/8
Surprise, surprise the Pirates lose to the Phillies, for the 3rd straight game as the offense fails to show up again. Anderson picks up the loss. Will the Pirates make a move for an ML bat in Contraction Draft? This series had fans screaming for Dexter Fowler to come up but the best the Pirates were willing to do is move Johnson to leadoff for the next series. Pirates start the writeup at 0-1, losing 3-1
6/9
For the second time this season, the Phils sweep the Pirates, reinforcing how much work remains to do in Pittsburgh before they can compete with the elite teams. Philly bats broke out for 10 runs, giving Hebson the L. Pirates drop to 0-2.
6/10
A new series and new hope as the Pirates arrive in Queens. Dontrelle Willis pitched like the D Train but hte offense couldn't get going as Kintzler went 7.2 innings, throwing a 1 hitter before turning it over to Layne and Benoit to complete the 2 hit shutout.
If you look at the boxscore for this one, under batting it is literally empty except for a Choo fielding error. Empty. That's all there is to say about that.
6/11
Look at that, my hypothesis is holding up as the Pirates drop a second straight game to the Mets. I am sorry if you were looking for suspense and drama as the Mets score early and hold off a late Pittsburgh rally to win 4-3. However, there are only so many ways to say that Rookie Cory Wade picked up the loss and the Pirates have lost 6 straight going back to the Philadelphia series.
6/12
The losing continues as the Mets hit the Pirates with their 7th consecutive loss and 2nd consecutive sweep. Kroenke pitched well but at this pooint, the kid just seems destined for a 0 win season. Kroenke threw 106 pitches going into the 8th inning and was seen at one point on his hands and knees pleading for a big hit. Erstad is the only name in the Pirates batting box score for this one, with a double in the first and 2 stolen bases. The trend is becoming worrisome.
6/13
New city, new hope, same results. Anderson again got the call to try to turn things around, but once again the Pirate offense was mediocre and Adam Eaton holds the Pirates offense to 2 runs over 7.1 innings before turning things over to Choate and Duke to close the game down. Pittsburgh loses its 8th straight.
6/14
They said it couldn't be done! Bryan Hepson held the Dodgers scoreless for 7.2 innings, giving up 4 hits and striking out 6. Mike Broadway gave up a run in relief and Bob Howry got the last out of the game. Pittsburgh's offense exploded in this one for 13 runs. Butler went yard in the 3rd, Sexosn hit a two out, three run homerun in the 6th, Flores hit one in the 9th. Sexson picks up the Pirate's first POG of the sim.
Morneau went 3-4 with his biggest game since his 4-4 game that broke him. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
6/15
Pittsburgh returns to form, never really getting the offense going [again]. The Dodgers got to Willis for 5 ER over 5 and cruise to an easy 9-4 win.
It isn't the ASG yet and we are running out of ways to be creative about losing. Maybe time for some new callups? We will see.
