Braves 6/24
June is still the time of year now Braves fans, to continue coming back to the ballpark (Atlanta Fulton County ballpark to be specific) where you can be part of sixty five thousand screaming fans to root on the Braves. Of course everyone knows we’re talking about being in Georgia!
This week the games went like this:
6/17 the Rockies came to town, and the Braves thought they had a day off, because they did not show up. Matinez took the mound and got injured for the season in the first inning, and the potent Braves bullpen got shelled, giving up 5 runs while the batters sat around doing nothing. Braves managed just four baserunners on two hits and two walks.
6/18 Game two of the Rockies series and Bud Smith decided to phone it in, having his worst outing of the season, all in one inning. He gave up 6 in the 2nd but outside of that was outstanding, giving up only one run in the other 8 innings. The Braves bats at least tried to bail him out, alas came up a run shy. 7 to 6 was the final, and back to back losses for the Braves. On the base paths the Brave went 5 and oh, with Sanchez collecting his 34th for 2nd place in the NL.
6/19 The Braves were trying to stop the Rockies from sweeping them at home, and sent Rupe out to hope to stop the bleeding. It was looking bleak as the Braves were down 2 to 1 going into the bottom of the 9th, Rupe had pitched well but was still on the hook for the loss, when the rails came off, with the bases loaded Sanchez hit a walk off single that drove in two Braves for the win. Braves had four swipes in the game including Sanchez’s 35th.
6/21 After a day off the Braves were now out on the west coast to take on the Padres, RA Dickey got the stat and the Braves batters hammered the Padre pitching staff to the tun of 17 runs on 17 hits. RA didn’t have a great day, but with that kind of run support, who needs to. Surprisingly with that kind of offensive explosion, the Braves did not hit a single homer. The runners were 5 for 5 on steals with Reyes increasing his NL lead to 41 with 2 steals.
6/22 John Smoltz too the mound today and never left. He picked up his first Complete Game Shut Out since 2007 which was his 98th of his career. Now 7 and 5 on the season, this was Johns best game in quite some time. The Braves scored 8 runs in support, but again no one went yard. The did however pick up 6 steals including Reyes 42nd.
6/23 The last game of the week was back in Hot’ lanta with Houston in town. The Braves sent Bud Smith out to hopefully atone for his miserable outing earlier in the week and while it was not pretty it was good enough. He gave up 3 over 8 innings, however the Braves had tagged the Houston pitching for four runs already and it was time for Valverde to say hi in a save situation for the first time this week. Eight pitches later, including a strikeout, the game was over and Valverde had his league leading 27th save.
For the week the Braves went four and two, and the Phillies were 3 and 3, and the Braves are FOUR up on them in the East now. The Braves have been doing quite well since the first two weeks of the season, and now are 3rd in the NL in runs scored, and 3rd in the league for ERA. For the Month of June the Braves are now 17 and 4 which is pretty good.
Like this song, not my usual rock stuff, and the best version imho
