The Pirates tweaked the lineup a little bit, looking for a little more run production and Kroenke continues to look for his first win. Let's see what happened.
6/17
Everyone was well rested and bushy tailed after a day off. It helps to know that the team with 9 wins is coming to town, too. The Pirates opened up an early 1-0 lead but the Padres got 2 off of rookie, Cory Wade, in the second inning. Wade settled down after the 2nd to go 8 full innings. Pittsburgh scored 2 in the 8th powered by a Choo double. Elliot Johnson went 1-3 in his first game as a full time leadoff hitter. Morneau went 1-3 and Sexson went 1-4. Not a lot of offense, but a step in the right direction as far as things have been going at the top of the lineup.
Pirates win this one 3-2 as Mattes picks up his 3rd save of the season. Pirates start the first sim of the double header with a win.

Zach Kroenke can officially brag at the 4th of July parties that he has won a Major League baseball game. The Pirates looked determined from the moment Elliott Johnson got things going in the first with a leadoff homerun. Lieberthal would go deep a couple batters later, with one on and two outs. In the battle of the pitching rookies, it was rookie Ricardo Rodriguez that couldn't get out of the second inning, and Kroenke went all 9, giving up a single run as the Pirates cruise to a 9-1 win and win 2 straight for what feels like the first time in a long time. Elliott Johnson went 3-5 and is 4-9 this sim.

The Pirates arrived at the ballpark looking for the first favorable sweep of the year. There wasn't much pitching to speak of this one as the Pirates broke out the sticks again and answered the Padres 2 run opening salvo with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
The Padres scored 2 in the top of the 3rd before the Pirates took their first lead of the game with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to lead, 6-4. The Pirates added another 4 spot in the bottom of the 4th (anyone playing the lottery?) and one more in the fifth before San Diego mounted a late inning rally, scoring 2 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th but fall short as Mattes picks up a sudden save.
3 unearned runs made this one more interesting than it had to be but the Pirates escaped. Elliott Johnson had a 1-4 game, to give him hits in the first 3 games since being named the permanent leadoff hitter. Morneau went 3-4 with 2 doubles and three RBIs to earn him the POG and hopefully indicating that his cold streak is over. Pirates win three in a row for the first time this season and start the sim at 3-0.

The players will get soft with all these off days.

Heading to Colorado the Pirate sluggers dreamed of the thin air to break out of their long ball slump and Elliott Johnson looked to continue his success at the top of the order. While Elliott Johnson went 0-4 with 2 K's at the top of the lineup, Billy Butler went 3-4 with 4 RBIs picked up the slack with two doubles. Choo, Erstad, and Flores got on base at the bottom of the lineup and Billy B drove them in. Hebson gave up 2 runs over 7 and Mantei and Mattes closed things out. Everyone is talking about Johnson but nobody has been talking about Billy B moving up to the 2nd slot. They probably will be talking after he earns the POG and extends the Pirate winning streak to 4!
6/22
They say all good things must end, and this winning streak ended in an epic 11-3 train crash. Pittsburgh opened up the scoring 1-0 off of a Morneau homerun, but Colorado answered with 3 in the bottom of the inning and 3 more in the 3rd, to lead 6-1. Pittsburgh tried to claw back into thingss with a run in the 6th and 7th innings to close the gap to 6-3 but Colorado put the Bucs out of their misery in the bottom of the 8th, scoring 5. Dontrelle Willis gave up 3 ER in 2.2 and another 3 unearned. Barnette and Villareal each pitched 2 scoreless innings before broadway got jacked up in the 8th.
Broadway was off to such a promising start to his career but he has struggled over his last 3 relief appearances. Let's see if the youngster can make some adjustments and get back on track.
Pirates fall to 4-1 for the sim to split the stupid 2 game series.
6/23
The next stop for the surging Pirate team would be in Milwaukee as the Brewers continue to look for traction, falling under .500. The Pirate came in looking to close the gap. Pittsburgh said at the beginning of the year, that they hoped for a 4th place finish or better, this series would be a good place to start making that goal a reality.
Cory Wade got his second start of the sim and pitched 8 strong innings, giving up 2 ER and picking up his 7th win of the season. He got the run support from the middle of the lineup as Sexson hit a solo homerun in the 2nd, and Morneau and Nieves hit solo shots in the 3rd. Pittsburgh gets off to a strong start in Milwaukee, winning 5-2 and improving to 5-1 on the sim.
Don't look now but the Pirates are 6-4 over their last 10! No changes are anticipated in the lineup as Kenny Powers was actually seen smiling after game 1 in Milwaukee. We don't want to jinx things but maybe we should have 2 sims every Saturday?
Let's Go Bucs!
