Phillies 2009 June Report
Record: 16-12
Home: 6-5
Road: 10-7
Positive Team Stat: ERA–2.71 (1st)
Notes: Honestly could be negative at this point, but I guess I’ll try to be positive and say we are still holding the top spot despite shit pitching this month from our guys plus Ben Sheets also missing significant time. This has simply not been our month. Two of our starting pitchers had ERAs over four, and a couple others were in the threes. This is a group that prides themselves at keeping it around the 2.5 mark. Are these Phillies just hitting a wall and the break came at a much needed time? I’m not sure, but surely we need to get it going if we want to win the division or much less make the playoffs at this rate.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Avg—.260 (14th)
Notes: The fuck is happening. We have three brilliant hitter guys, and yet we are 14th. I’d be willing to bet not many other teams have as much or more. Just brutal to see these idiots underperform again. The good thing is, we are good enough to probably make the playoffs, but still this is why I get annoyed with stacked teams. I’ll find any little thing and nitpick it. This is one of them. Just annoying. Need my guys to start stepping it up. The NL is too tough for them to be under performing this badly. Chase Utley hitting below .230 is just laughable at this point.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: CF Hideki Matsui
Playoff Stats: .289/.400/.500/.928 OPS 10 2Bs 0 3Bs 3 HRs 15 RBIs 13 Runs 17 BBs 9 Ks
Notes: Matsui is so damn consistent. He can hit for power, get on base, but also doesn’t strike out and usually hits for a nice solid average. He’s really been the backbone at times for our team, and we need him to carry the boys while lighting a fire up their asses. The hitting simply hasn’t been good enough these days.
Best Pitcher: SP Chris R. Young
Playoff Stats: 6 Starts 4-1 3.14 ERA 48.2 IP 37 Hs 17 ERs 11 BBs 34 Ks
Notes: Well, what do ya know!? It’s Chris Young again. He has easily been our most stable and consistent pitcher this year. Ben Sheets has been down with another June injury. Radke was dominating, but the wheels fell off this month. John Thomson seems to be getting unlucky this year. Cole Hamels has truly been hit or miss. When he’s good, he’s real good…when he’s bad, he’s real bad. With Chris Young? He has just been a guy we can count on this season. We need him to continue this for the rest of the season.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose Iglesias (AA)
Notes: Iglesias was acquired in a trade with the Mets. We typically don’t see many divisional rivals make trades, but Iglesias wanted out once the Mets GM Greeme said he wanted nothing to do with him. From there, the Phillies were able to negotiate a trade and acquire his services. He’s hitting the heck out of the ball, and the Phillies are hopeful he can continue to trend in the right direction as a teenager…he is just 19 years young.
