Tuesday 7/19/2009: New York (A)'s Corey Hart unloads three times
TAMPA BAY - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. New York (A)'s rightfielder Corey Hart accomplished that feat in a 12-11 win over Tampa Bay. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Erik Bedard in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. A 384 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Ryan Vogelsong in the 8th inning. Number 3 in the 10th inning, a shot estimated at 345 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Corey finished 5 for 7, scoring FOUR times and driving in 4 runs. In 1421 career at bats, he has hit 53 homeruns and collected 203 RBI. New York (A) improved its record to 28-67, scoring 12 runs on 16 hits.
Tuesday 7/19/2009: Seattle's Mike Sweeney slams five hits
MINNESOTA - Mike Sweeney hits 'em where they ain't. Minnesota certainly agrees as Seattle's catcher unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off J.P. Howell in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 398 feet, cleared the wall in left field. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 6th (one RBI) and in the 8th inning . Mike scored 4 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 108 hits in 301 at bats, resulting in a .359 batting average. Seattle improved its record to 63-32, scoring 26 runs on 24 hits.
Monday 7/18/2009: Zack Greinke quiets Los Angeles (N) bats with shutout
LOS ANGELES (N) - Great days are rare. But not for St. Louis' right-hander Zack Greinke. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 5th inning David Ortiz doubled to break up the no-hitter. Greinke (13-7) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 100 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for St. Louis was catcher Brian Schneider, he got 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a double. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 7/18/2009: Guerrero (OAK) and Hamels (PHI) win P.O.W. award
Wilton Guerrero from Oakland wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Wilton was on fire, hitting .462 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. He has hit 13 longballs while batting .306 this season. His 112 hits and 14 walks add up to a .331 on-base percentage. Philadelphia's pitcher Cole Hamels had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! This season Hamels compiled an ERA of 2.85, going 10-6 in 20 starts. He fanned 161 while giving up 120 hits in 151.2 innings. Cole has pitched 3 shutouts and 4 complete games.

FLORIDA - Florida's centerfielder Dmitri Young suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Wrist. Young has walked 31 times this year and posts a .340 OBP. While batting .268, 80 for 298, he has driven in 51 runs.

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's first baseman Troy Glaus will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between San Francisco and Pittsburgh. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Glaus collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. San Francisco wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Glaus had suffered a Torn Calf Muscle. Glaus has hit 18 taters this year while batting .245. He adds 16 doubles, along with 45 runs scored. He's 9th in the National League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns!
