Trying to get the report in before the next sim, they are coming fast and furiously. Let's see how things are shapng up around both leagues. 101 games into the season, Juane Pierre has gone on a furious tear to take a 2 base lead over Detroit's Taveras, who at one point looked destined to run away with the contest. At the time of the June Need For Speed Report, Taveras led by 4 bases.
Rollins moves up from 4th to fifth to be the other member of the 60 base club at the end of July. Pedroia climbs from 6 to 4th to give Boston the #3 and #4 base stealers in the AL. Gutierrez remains steady at #5 with 17 stolen bases since the last report. Furcal climbs from 7 to 6 while Chipper Jones falls the whole way to #7 for Detroit, with only 7 steals since the last report.
The Angel's DaVanon climbs from 9 to a tie for 8th with Hholiday. I thought Old Man Suzuki was changing uniforms, but maybe not after all? He remains at #10 in the AL.
Quest for Lou Brock's 1970 Record of 106
Juane Pierre is on a 67% clip, putting him on pace for 108 steals. There isn't much wiggle room here but he is on the correct pace as the calendar turns to August.
Taveras is on a 65.3% clip. He needs to get it back in gear to get back on pace. His current projection gives him 106 steals.
It looks like it is going to be a hot race down the stretch, and it could end with 2 dudes breaking the record.

Over in the NL, Reyes and Sanchez continue to be the 1-2 punch at the top of the NL speed list. Reyes has 54 steals 101 games into the 2009 season. As we know from the AL math, this will leave shy of Lou Brock's record of 106. It appears that the NL record will be safe for another year unless someone in a Braves uniform lights a fire.
Figgins remains at 3rd to break up the Brave log jam at the top. Podsednick moves up from 5th to a tie for 4th with the firs tof two Giants on the list, Angel Pagan. Fellow Giant Hunter Pence put together 12 base month to move from 10 to a tie for 6th with Cubby Shane Victorino, with 37 steals. Perez, Kemp, and Granderson round out the top 10 with a tie for 8th.
While the race in the AL is hot, there is a lot of jockeying for position to do in the NL. The race at the top could be a two man race, but the rest of the top 10 could end with, by my math, 64 different possible outcomes, assuming no names appear or disappear from the list. August should be fun!
