Philadelphia–Cory Seidman from NBC Sports Philadelphia reporting
The Philadelphia Phillies were able to land the 3rd overall pick via the lottery. When that occurred, the Phillies brass was jumping with joy because they knew they were going to get an absolutely premium player. The Giants smartly took Freddie Freeman who is a franchise changing bat at only 19 years old. He is already performing at an extremely high level. With the next pick, the Rockies took David Price which caught some ire from opposing GMs. Well respected GMs such as Dan (Mariners) and Play (Cubs) were puzzled with the decision saying, “Would have thought Gio Gonzalez was a lock to go #2 no?” We then had a not so well respected GM (I’m joking Stool!!!) such as Stool (Cardinals) say, “Needs to be Gio.” The Rockies were adamant that they wanted a prospect that can grow with their team and preferred Price because he was just starting his clock whereas Gio is a couple seasons in. That’ll be an interesting decision to dissect down the line.
With the very next pick, the Philadelphia Phillies were ecstatic to land Gio Gonzalez who is just 23 years of age. He has just entered year two of his career. Gio has had a rough start to his career with an ERA of 5.00, but most scouts believe his potential is going to be unbelievable. With a team that has a couple of starting pitchers who are both getting up there in John Thomson (35) and Brad Radke (36), they needed to be able to re-tool. Well, as luck would have it, this certainly provided that avenue. With a rotation that has Ben Sheets (31), Chris Young (30), and Cole Hamels (25) in the primes of their careers, the Phillies should continue to be a juggernaut from the pitching side for years to come.
There have been rumors circling that John Thomson could be moved in the offseason provided there’s a market for his services. If not, then the team will gladly keep him, but they believe he should garner some serious interest. Since John Thomson has arrived in Philly, he’s helped the team accomplish two titles in three seasons. He’s trying to get them a third in four seasons which would certainly give the Phillies a dynasty billing. If John Thomson stays, then Brad Radke will most likely be on the move even though he has been tremendous in his own right, and really helped this team break the most wins ever in a season. He’s our #5 starting pitcher, but man he has outpitched some of the very best this league has to offer. Truly impressive what he has done in his career. He even made the NL all star team this past season.
We would be remiss if we didn’t also talk about the Phillies 2nd round selection in the contraction draft. They selected closer Ramon A. Ramirez. They were a little bit shocked he was available due to his filthy stuff. He’s a guy who is extremely hard to barrel up. His weakness is absolutely walking a bunch of batters, but if he can hone that in, then man the Phillies just grabbed a cost-effective reliever at the very end to complete their contract draft. Both of these guys are cheap for the interim which makes this Phillies roster even more dangerous moving forward. Heck of a draft for general manager Stevie B as he continues to look at building something absolutely special here.
