Monday 8/8/2009: Player of the Week honors go to Grandal and Cox
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Yasmani Grandal, Detroit's starting catcher. Grandal helped his team with an average of .611 and 10 RBI in 18 at bats. He has hit 15 homeruns while batting .280 this season. His 104 hits and 47 walks add up to a .362 on-base percentage. Steve Cox from Colorado wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Steve was on fire, hitting .476 with 3 HR and 13 RBI. Steve is hitting .234 this year, with 87 hits in 372 at bats. He has driven in 58 runs, slugging .476.
Saturday 8/6/2009: Detroit's Calero severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Kiko Calero for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Chad Hermansen in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Calero was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Elbow. Kiko has a record of 5-3 this season, with an ERA of 1.68. In 80.1 Innings he was able to strike out 93 batters.
Thursday 8/4/2009: Carlos Pena on fire, laces five hits
SAN DIEGO - Carlos Pena led Arizona to a 15-2 win over San Diego by squeezing five hits out of his bat. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Ricardo Rodriguez. His 4th hit, a three-run homerun off Vinnie Chulk in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 435 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 4th inning (two RBIs) and in the 7th . Carlos did drive in 7 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .226.
Thursday 8/4/2009: Shawn Green slams 500th homerun
ATLANTA - Atlanta's first baseman Shawn Green was in good mood after the game against Philadelphia, and he had every reason as he made baseball history while collecting his 500th career homerun. Along with his 500 homeruns, Shawn collected 2361 hits and 1604 RBI in 15 seasons. Shawn hit 30+ homeruns in a season 8 times, hitting 40 bombs 2 times. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His historic shot, off Travis Harper in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Wednesday 8/3/2009: Yasmani Grandal parks three against New York (A)
DETROIT - Detroit beat New York (A) 20-8, but that was not the real story of the game. Yasmani Grandal was, as he went deep three times. A 386 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st bomb, a three-run homerun off Joe Fontenot in the 5th inning. His 2nd blast, a three-run homerun off Randy Flores in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 401 feet from home plate. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 405 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Yasmani finished 5 for 6, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 8 RBI. On 7/19/2009, Corey Hart was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Monday 8/1/2009: Boston's Pedroia wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Dustin Pedroia, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Dustin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .520 with 2 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.000. Dustin is hitting .324 this year, with 131 hits in 404 at bats. He has driven in 85 runs, slugging .512. He's 9th in the American League in batting and 8th in RBI! Albert Pujols wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Albert pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .478 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .957.

The best month of July in the American League certainly had Boston's right-hander Carlos Zambrano, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 4-0 in 4 was among the leagues best this month. In 34 innings of work he allowed just 13 hits while striking out 41, compiling an ERA of just 0.26. Carlos got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .188 against Carlos this season. While posting an ERA of 1.98 he went 15-4 in 21 starts, fanning 174 and walking 19 hitters. He has 11 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Chad Billingsley pitched like a legend in July, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 2-0 in 3 was among the leagues best this month. Sunday 7/31/2009: Wandy Rodriguez (HOU) will miss 8 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's left-hander Wandy Rodriguez suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Cincinnati he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. In 5 starts this year Wandy struck out 36 batters in 44 innings of work. His ERA is 4.09, his record 3-5.
