Braves 8/8
August is still the time of year Braves fans, to continue coming back to the ballpark! Let us look at the week in review once again.
This week the games went like this:
7/31 The last game of July and the Braves sent out old man Smoltz who didn’t even finish the forth inning. Then it became pitching by committee with the top three starters all getting time in the game. The Batters came through and tied, then took the lead in the 7th, and then piled it on in the 8th to put up 6 on the Cubs. Valverde came on at the end for almost two innings of work and got the save for his 36th of the season. The Braves were three for four in steals and Reyes added two of them to now have 58 on the season.
8/1 The start of a new month and so much hope in the air after Atlanta finished July 19 and 5. Out trotted RA Dickey and he was pulled after 5 innings and then the Braves went with relievers. Again the bats came through and the Braves were averted of a loss. Going into the bottom of the 9th the Braves were up and Valverde came on to get his 36th save of the season. Green sent a two run dinger out in the 7th which proved to be the winning RBI of the game.
8/2 Game three of the Chicago series and the Braves were dreaming of brooms. The 15 – 5 Bud Smith went out to get the win, and fell flat on his face, giving up 6 over the 8 innings he pitched, on just 6 hits. Braves hit a homer and Reyes got his NL leading 59th steal.
8/3 The Phillies in town for game one of a four game series and Rupe got screwed by the fielders gloves. Three unearned runs was the difference in a game where the Braves outhit the Phillies. Braves picked up two steals including Reyes NL leading 60th. The attendance was 60421 on this Baseball Cap Day at Atlanta Fulton County Coliseum. The weather was partly cloudy, 79 degrees, with the wind blowing left to right at 18 mph
8/4 Game two of the four game series had Smoltz trying to Slow down the Phillies, alas he gave up 5 over 8+ innings and the Phillies cruised to another 5 to 2 win. Shawn green sent one into the cheapo seats for his 500th career homer, which was nice for the home crowd to see. Braves base runners also picked up a couple steals in the game. Attendance was 63674 on Glove Day at Atlanta Fulton County Coliseum, while the weather was clear skies, 79 degrees, and the wind blowing right to left at 11 mph.
8/5 Game three of the series had RA Dickey going against the Phillies, and he too for the 3rd straight game was victimized for 5 runs by the Phillies. This was the Phillies 3rd straight win vs the Braves. With the loss RA fell to 11 and 3 on the season. Hopefully he regains the magic he had had as he has had back to back stinkers. There is really nothing else to say about this game, as the Braves had nothing positive really happen. The attendance was 55207 at Atlanta Fulton County Coliseum, and the weather was partly cloudy, 83 degrees, with the wind blowing left to right at 9 mph.
8/6 Well dang at least the Braves avoided the sweep. Game four Bud Smith shut em down going the distance and winning 4 to 1.
For the week the Braves went three and four, and the Phillies were 6 and 1, and the Braves are TWO up on them in the East now. The Braves have been doing quite well since the first two weeks of the season, and now are 3rd in the NL in runs scored, and 3rd in the league for ERA. For the Month of August, the Braves are just 2 and 4 which is pretty awful.
