Monday 8/15/2009: Cory Wade shuts out San Diego on one hit
PITTSBURGH - Cory Wade had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Pittsburgh's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 24 games started. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Wade (9-10) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 98 pitches. Jesus Flores provided Pittsburgh with the offense Wade needed as he went 4 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 8/15/2009: Atlanta's Dickey wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Manny Ramirez, who wins the award for the 17th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .538 and hit .438, while driving in 19 runs. Ramirez has walked 75 times this year and posts a .421 OBP. While batting .306, 137 for 447, he has driven in 124 runs. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Atlanta's pitcher R.A. Dickey had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Dickey was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.60. Along the way he struck out 14 in 15 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 8/14/2009: Manny Ramirez on fire, laces five hits
NEW YORK (A) - Manny Ramirez hits 'em where they ain't. New York (A) certainly agrees as Boston's designated hitter unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Joe Fontenot. His 2nd cleared the based, a three-run double off Joe Fontenot in the 2nd inning. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 432 feet, cleared the wall in left field. He had singles in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Manny did drive in 8 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .306. Boston scored 15 runs on 17 hits.
Saturday 8/13/2009: Odalis Perez turns in great performance against New York (N)
ARIZONA - Odalis Perez had some fun again. New York (N) hitters did not. Arizona's southpaw gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 25 career shutouts in 220 games started. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Perez (18-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 111 pitches. Arizona's first baseman Carlos Pena finished 3 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Perez. Arizona scored 3 runs on 8 hits.
Friday 8/12/2009: Jeff Weaver shuts out Kansas City on 2 hits
KANSAS CITY - Jeff Weaver had some fun again. Kansas City hitters did not. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 30 career shutouts in 285 games started. With one out in the 6th inning Todd Dunwoody singled to break up the no-hitter. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Weaver (14-6) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 112 pitches. Matt Holliday provided Seattle with the offense Weaver needed as he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Seattle improved its record to 79-37, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 8/10/2009: San Diego has no chance in a 1-hitter by Aaron Myette
HOUSTON - Aaron Myette had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Houston's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 203 games started. Myette (11-8) struck out an astounding 14 and walked none, throwing 75 of 113 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Brad Fullmer helped Myette at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, blasting a homerun. Houston scored 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 8/8/2009: Mark Buehrle turns in great performance against Texas
TEXAS - Great days are rare. But not for Oakland's left-hander Mark Buehrle. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Nick Swisher spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 6th inning. Buehrle (12-8) struck out 1 and walked none, throwing 50 of 85 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Wilton Guerrero helped Buehrle at the plate, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring 2 runs. Oakland improved its record to 59-53, scoring 8 runs on 18 hits.
