Phillies 2009 August Report
Record: 22-7
Home: 11-3
Road: 11-4
Positive Team Stat: HRs–167/Steals–224 (4th)
Notes: The blend of power and speed this team possesses has been super fun. The Phillies offense has a real shot at having two players (Chase Utley and Matt Kemp) accomplish 30/50 seasons. Curtis Granderson and Scott Rolen both should be able to do 20/40 seasons. This is what makes this team such a real problem to contest with. They can play defense, hit the ball for power, and steal a base. This is why this Phillies team is going to win 100+ games for a 4th consecutive season, and this is why they most likely will be another tough out come playoff time.
Negative Team Stat: Opponent’s Batting Avg—.219 (4th)
Notes: Everyone would love to be in that top five mix for holding hitters to such a low batting average. Not these Phillies. They expect to be number one, and when they’ve slipped to now fourth place in the entire league, it’s been a bit of a slap in the face to what was the expectation. Injuries have certainly played a role, but they’re getting some down years from some guys. Chris R. Young’s the only one who has exceeded his expectations, but even he has gotten hit with the injury bug. They are really looking forward to his return soon. King Cole has certainly gotten it going…more on that later. Can this Phillies rotation hit stride when the playoffs get here? That’s really the main question going forward.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 2B Chase Utley
Playoff Stats: .340/.389/.699/1.088 OPS 3 2Bs 2 3Bs 10 HRs 27 RBIs 22 Runs 4 BBs 3 Ks
Notes: Chase Utley…YOU are the MAN! He was great in April, and then just hit an absolute lull for the next few months. However, he got back on his horse and slammed ten home runs which is the second time he has now accomplished that feat this season. His power has been on full display during those two months. Only nine home runs the other three months. Wild. Utley hit for a ridiculous average, and cared less about walking and instead more about hitting the ball hard. Pretty fun month from a guy who has been one hell of a leader for this franchise.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
Playoff Stats: 7 Starts 7-0 1.37 ERA 52.2 IP 28 Hs 8 ERs 17 BBs 48 Ks
Notes: King Cole is back. Just absolutely dominating his last two months which have resulted in back to back pitcher of the month awards from our side. It’s still wild that Ben Sheets (who is our best pitcher) still hasn’t taken one of these home and got it going yet. Now would be a good time for him to find his best stuff…which by the way he is now 7th all time in ERA with a 2.40 ERA. Anyway, back to Hamels who is now 12-0 in his last 13 starts with an ERA of roughly around 1.50…just filthy. He looks to keep it going in September as the Phillies continue to pursue the Atlanta Braves for the division title.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: LF Brandon Guyer (AAA)
Notes: Brandon Guyer is coming off his best Triple A season, and he will look to continue that next season. He is coming off a 40 extra base hit campaign, and while he did get some nice player development, he still needs more work if he wants to become something special at the big league stage. The Phillies brass have told me that they think he’s now their second most valuable prospect in the minors. Heck of a season Mr. Guyer!
