The best month of September in the American League certainly had Toronto's right-hander Delvin James, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 41.1 innings of work he allowed just 39 hits while striking out 29, compiling an ERA of just 1.09. This season James compiled an ERA of 2.51, going 16-3 in 23 starts. He fanned 109 while giving up 141 hits in 161.1 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. The best month of September in the American League certainly had Toronto's left-hander Bud Smith, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Carlos Gonzalez this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Gonzalez helped his team with an average of .352 and 33 RBI in 122 at bats. Gonzalez has hit for a .310 average this season. He has 55 extra base hits along with 276 total bases, resulting in a .457 slugging percentage. The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Justin Morneau, Pittsburgh's starting first baseman. In 105 at bats he hit .381 with 4 HR and 19 RBI. This year Morneau drove in 98 and scored 82 runs while batting .273 with 20 homeruns.
Thursday 9/29/2009: Manny Ramirez collects 3000th hit against Tampa Bay
TAMPA BAY - Boston's first baseman Manny Ramirez joined some elite company today, collecting his 3000th career hit! His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Stephen Strasburg. Along with his 3000 hits, Manny collected 583 homeruns and 1998 RBI in 16 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Thursday 9/29/2009: Willy Taveras uncorks five hits against Oakland
DETROIT - Detroit's centerfielder Willy Taveras once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Thursday. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Noah Lowry in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 358 feet from home plate. His 3rd hit, off Noah Lowry in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. His 4th hit was a RBI triple off Doug Nickle in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Willy did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 189 hits this season, accounting for a .298 batting average. Detroit scored 16 runs on 14 hits.
Monday 9/26/2009: Player of the Week honors go to Beltre and Dickey
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Adrian Beltre, Seattle's starting third baseman. He hit .400 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.100 in 30 at bats. Beltre has hit 44 bombs this year while batting .301. He adds 42 doubles, along with 124 runs scored. It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's pitcher R.A. Dickey. R.A. went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 9 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 28 starts this year R.A. struck out 131 batters in 209.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.40, his record 19-5. R.A. has pitched 5 shutouts and 8 complete games.
Saturday 9/24/2009: Ugueth Urbina (TOR) will miss 5-6 weeks
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Ugueth Urbina suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Seattle he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Bicep Muscle. Opposing players hit .136 against Ugueth this season. While posting an ERA of 0.66 he went 3-0 in 0 starts, fanning 70 and walking 14 hitters.
Friday 9/23/2009: Houston's Hafner out for 4-5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's second baseman Travis Hafner will miss at least 4-5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Strained Anterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .335, Travis hit .261 and slugged .388. He has collected 39 runs batted in this year.
