50 Saves thru 2009?
Well HoFFBL aficionados today we do a deep dive into the all time saves in a season with 50 or more. Surprisingly when doing the research, I found out that it had never been done pre 193, and when it was done in 1983, the record was set by Corbett and has never been broken. Corbett tied it two seasons later in 85, as did Jason Isringhausen in 2002.
All total there have only been 11 times in the league history that 50 saves in a season has occurred, and five are by Braves closers. Corbett has three and Valverde has two. The are also the only pitchers in the history to have more than one.
50 Jose Valverde (ATL,NL) 2009 52 Mike V. Gonzalez (SEA) 2006 55 Mariano Rivera (MIN,AL) 2005 52 Jose Valverde (ATL,NL) 2005 56 Jason Isringhausen (BOS CHA,AL) 2002 50 Doug Jones (STL,NL) 1995 53 Doug Corbett(ATL,NL) 1990 52 Bert Roberge (MON) 1989 56 Doug Corbett (ATL,NL) 1985 55 Jesse Orosco (LAN,NL) 1984 56 Doug Corbett (ATL,NL) 1983
Also, interesting to note is, the AL only has 3 of the 11. Let us congratulate Valverde on joining the list for a second time, even if it took him 163 games to do it this season.
The so close but no cigar group, also has a familiar name on it. 49 Brian Wilson (SFG,NL) 2007 49 Jeff Nelson (LAN,NL) 1997 48 Doug Corbett (ATL,NL) 1989
Can Valverde pose the challenge to Doug’s legacy? Will the Sandman unseat Doug at the top of the all time saves list?
