Phillies 2009 Postseason Report
Record: 2-3
Home: 1-2
Road: 1-1
Offense: 19 Runs (3.8/Game)
Notes: Ultimately the offense wasn’t as good as the prior two postseason appearances. I believe both prior times, the offense eclipsed 5+ run per game. Not this time, but we kinda knew that might happen due to the Cardinals elite pitching. The Cards had a pitching staff that was even ahead of our Phillies. Aside from Scott Rolen and Carlos Ruiz going absolutely off…there was really nobody that did well. It’s just almost impossible for two guys to carry an offense. The rest of our bats truly went silent for the most part. Tough times, but this was my fear of guys not being able to get a hit when needed.
Pitching: 18 Runs (3.48 ERA)
Notes: Our pitching was fine, but ultimately Hamels let this group down. He was simply not good enough. Sheets and Young and the rest did a nice job overall. When you start to even nitpick, even Ben Sheets wasn’t his dominant self. These were really tough times, and it just seemed like the inconsistencies really were a thing with us this season. We’ll be back, though.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: C Carlos Ruiz
Playoff Stats: .421/.450/1.763/1.263 OPS 2 2Bs 1 3Bs 4 HRs 9 RBIs 5 Runs 0 BBs 0 Ks
Notes: Carlos Ruiz was absolutely unbelievable. My question was…why the hell did the Cards keep pitching to him. There were no walks from Chooch, and yet he absolutely unloaded on them. Look at those numbers…seriously. So impressive. He had seven extra base hits with four of them being via the home run ball. This is certainly one of the best catchers in baseball, and the Phillies can’t wait to keep sending him out as our backstop who will continue to call games and hit with the best of them.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
Playoff Stats: 2 Starts 0-0 2.40 ERA 15 IP 11 Hs 4 ERs 3 BBs 16 Ks
Notes: The funny thing is…this might be Ben Sheets worst postseason performance. That’s how unbelievable he truly has been in the prior two instances. He had only given up seven earned runs in the prior two postseasons where he pitched 81+ innings. Simply as dominant as it gets. Let’s just hope Ben Sheets avoids the injury bug next season, and gives us a full season again. I think he’s always in the mix for the NL Cy Young award. What a pitcher!
