Monday 5/2/2010: Jerome Williams blanks Cincinnati with a 2-hitter
CINCINNATI - It was a great day for Milwaukee's right-hander Jerome Williams. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Cincinnati on Monday. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Williams (3-2) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 104 pitches. Milwaukee's third baseman Khalil Greene finished with 4 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, stroking two 2B's, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Williams. Milwaukee improved its record to 7-20, scoring 5 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 5/2/2010: San Francisco's Sandoval wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's first baseman Miguel Cabrera had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Miguel was on fire, hitting .435 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco's starting third baseman. Sandoval helped his team with an average of .435 and 8 RBI in 23 at bats.
Sunday 5/1/2010: Pineiro and Harden receive Pitcher of the Month award
Seattle's pitcher Joel Pineiro is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. His ERA of just 0.22 helped him to a 5-0 record in April. He worked 40.1 innings, striking out 30 hitters while walking 5. Joel got two complete game shutouts as well! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's Rich Harden. He had an ERA of just 0.72 in 50.1 innings of work in which he struck out 56 hitters. His record in April is 5-0. Rich fired two shutouts!
Sunday 5/1/2010: Red hot Cabrera and Burroughs win Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Miguel was on fire, hitting .378 with 9 homeruns and 31 RBI. The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Sean Burroughs, Arizona's starting third baseman. In 99 at bats he hit .404 with 5 HR and 23 RBI.
Saturday 4/30/2010: Torii Hunter out for full season
SEATTLE - Seattle's centerfielder Torii Hunter will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Seattle and Houston. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Hunter collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Seattle wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hunter had suffered a Ruptured Medial Collateral Ligament. His season features a batting average of .247 (19 hits in 77 AB), 4 doubles, no triples and 2 bombs. Hunter collected 9 RBI and 12 runs as well.
Friday 4/29/2010: Wilton Guerrero out for 5 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland's season took a blow when Wilton Guerrero suffered a serious injury in the game against Detroit. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Guerrero will probaby miss 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Guerrero was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Tricep Muscle. This year Guerrero drove in 9 and scored 10 runs while batting .287 with no taters.
Wednesday 4/27/2010: B.J Upton clubs five hits in a game
TORONTO - Toronto's second baseman B.J Upton once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Los Angeles (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Wednesday. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Ricky Nolasco in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Ricky Nolasco in the 3rd inning left his bat for a double. Number 4 in the 5th inning accounted for a RBI double. He had singles in the 4th (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . B.J did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 24 hits this season, accounting for a .286 batting average. Toronto improved its record to 17-7, scoring 12 runs on 15 hits.
Tuesday 4/26/2010: Jose Fernandez out for 6 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's Jose Fernandez suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Minnesota. Fernandez fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .176 (9 hits in 51 AB), 2 doubles, no triples and 3 bombs. Fernandez collected 7 RBI and 10 runs as well.
