Phillies 2010 March/April Report
Record: 15-10
Home: 10-3
Road: 5-7
Positive Team Stat: BBs Allowed–47 (2nd)
Notes: Our pitching has been really elite at not giving free passes. Even though we lost Radke due to retirement, the Phillies continue to chug along thanks to adding Gio Gonzalez who is a supremely young and talented arm. Sheets, Young, Hamels, and Thomson continue to do their thing for this incredible pitching staff. Having said that, it still hasn’t been as dominant as it can be. The Phillies believe they have the best overall rotation, but they need to see that come to fruition.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.239 (22nd)
Notes: I mean, this team is not going to make the playoffs if this lineup doesn’t pull their heads from their asses. You simply can’t be this inept with the talent that is on board. Grandy hitting .149? Utley hitting .225? Chooch hitting .231? What in the hell is going on? It’s almost like this team is allergic to a good start. Luckily with this disastrous start from the offense, the Phillies are only separated by two games from the Braves with the Marlins sandwiched in between. Let’s go boys!
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 3B Scott Rolen
March/April Stats: .337/.409/.554/.963 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 4 HRs 14 RBIs 16 Runs 7 BBs 21 Ks
Notes: Scott Rolen really was our only bat who decided to give a shit this month. He had a nice complete month with ten extra base hits while hitting well over .300 for the month. If this is Rolen’s last year in a Phillies uniform, let’s hope he can deliver his finest season yet. He has it in him to give the Phillies one last strong season from a really nice career.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
March/April Stats: 5 Starts 4-1 1.70 ERA 42.1 IP 23 Hs 8 ERs 8 BBs 42 Ks
Notes: King Cole is back and looks to be better than ever! Is this the first season where we see him be our Ace as Ben Sheets takes a back seat? I’m not convinced of that just yet, because we’ve seen Hamels have plenty of months like this before where he looks absolutely untouchable, and then the next month he gets hit around in a few starts. I truly do believe that this Cole Hamels moving forward is going to be one of the best pitchers in the league, but he needs to prove it over the course of the entire season Looking forward to seeing how this year goes for one of the best lefties in baseball.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias (AA)
Notes: Welp. He’s done for the year after a torn rotator cuff muscle, but let’s hope he can get back on the field next season and pick up where he had left off in Double A. Hitting .330 with seven doubles and one dinger was a really excellent start for Mr. Iglesias. Let’s hope he recovers well, and finds his game once again!
