Phillies 2010 May Report
Record: 21-8
Home: 8-4
Road: 13-4
Positive Team Stat: ERA/Runs Allowed–2.49/151 (1st)
Notes: Much better! I always thought we had the best overall pitching staff, and that’s really becoming true here. Other teams like Boston (at times) and the Braves (they’ve only used a 4 man) are relying on 4-man rotations at the start. We are using our regular rotation in full. The Phillies are hopeful that this will give them flexibility down the stretch to employ a 4-man rotation whenever they want/need to. Cole Hamels is having a career season. Chris Young just continues to improve. John Thomson is doing his thing. The crazy thing is…Ben Sheets is having an absolutely down year. Wait until he gets it going!
Negative Team Stat: Runs Scored–240 (14th)
Notes: When you have this type of hitting talent, you expect to score more runs…you just do. This is a lineup that is loaded aside from Brad Hawpe who is now going to be replaced by the future hall of famer Manny Ramirez. I expect us to score more runs as the season progresses, and I expect us to really get on a serious roll because of it. There is just simply too much hitting talent here to not be a top 5 offense in this league. Hopefully June on, we see a ton of big numbers from our studs.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: LF Matt Kemp
May Stats: .284/.371/.500/.871 OPS 6 2Bs 2 3Bs 4 HRs 15 RBIs 17 Runs 14 BBs 15 Ks
Notes: Matt Kemp is our leadoff hitter and when he gets it going, the offense gets it going. He was so much better this month as he got on base about 37% of the time. He also added in 12 extra base hits. He is an extremely dynamic leadoff hitter. He can get on base at a high clip, steal a base, hit for power, etc. Just a fun player who has really blossomed over the years! We are hoping he gets on one of those runs.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
May Stats: 6 Starts 4-0 1.69 ERA 42.2 IP 42 Hs 8 ERs 6 BBs 45 Ks
Notes: Arguably Chris Young and Cole Hamels had slightly better overall numbers, but it was close enough for me to give some shine to our newest toy in Gio Gonzalez. He is starting to really round into form, and if he does really become an Ace this year, then look out National League. Gio was really sharp, and while you might be able to get a hit, it usually is only a single at best. Gio does not give up extra base hits…period. He also isn’t walking batters now, and that’s a trend worth keeping an eye on moving forward. He’s going to be a really special pitcher for us.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: LF Brandon Guyer (AAA)
Notes: Brandon Guyer is just two months in, but he already has 18 doubles and 10 dingers. He is hitting the heck out of the ball right now in what has been his best season by a mile in Triple A. He should be a contributor as soon as potentially next year with Scott Rolen’s future in question. The Phillies are looking forward to him eventually down the line.
