Wednesday 6/22/2010: Odalis Perez turns in great performance against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Arizona's left-hander Odalis Perez is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Perez 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 28th shutouts in his career. Perez (9-6) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Placido Polanco provided Arizona with the offense Perez needed as he went 5 for 5, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 12-0.
Wednesday 6/22/2010: Francisco Liriano turns in great performance against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Francisco Liriano took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Colorado's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 146 games started. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Liriano (10-4) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 115 pitches. Colorado's rightfielder Ivanon Coffie went 3 for 3, hitting a double, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Liriano. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Wednesday 6/22/2010: Houston's Beckett severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston is without its right-hander Josh Beckett for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Colby Rasmus in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Beckett was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Herniated Disc Back. This season Beckett compiled an ERA of 2.65, going 8-3 in 15 starts. He fanned 119 while giving up 99 hits in 98.2 innings.
Monday 6/20/2010: Drew and Matsui win Player of the Week award
J.D. Drew from Houston wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Drew helped his team with an average of .444 and 7 RBI in 27 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Philadelphia's Hideki Matsui this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hideki went 12 for 27 (.444), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. He has hit 5 homeruns while batting .270 this season. His 70 hits and 24 walks add up to a .335 on-base percentage.
Sunday 6/19/2010: Adam Wainwright fires 1-hitter against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Houston's right-hander Adam Wainwright is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Wainwright (9-5) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 105 pitches. Mike Moustakas provided Houston with the offense Wainwright needed as he finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Houston scored 5 runs on 10 hits.
Saturday 6/18/2010: Chicago (A)'s Zito out for 6-7 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (A)'s left-hander Barry Zito will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Zito was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Zito compiled an ERA of 3.60, going 6-3 in 14 starts. He fanned 56 while giving up 74 hits in 100 innings.
Friday 6/17/2010: Hideki Matsui on fire, laces five hits
SAN DIEGO - Hideki Matsui led Philadelphia to a 25-0 win over San Diego by squeezing five hits out of his bat. Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 381 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 4th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Willis Roberts. A two-run double off Vinnie Chulk in the 5th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 6th inning he belted a RBI double off Michael Smith. Number 5 in the 9th inning accounted for a double. Hideki did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .274.
