2010 HOFFBL Team Awards
Best Team: Philadelphia Phillies (57-24)
Notes: Honestly there are a bunch of teams in the mix, but I think there can be a strong case for our squad. We play in easily the toughest division. Three teams with at least 52 wins, and the Mets are even over .500 with a 41-40 record. I also think while other teams have been either dependent on a 4-man rotation, or they have used it a good bit, we have simply been riding a 5-man rotation for the entire season which sets us up nicely for the end run here. We have five aces, we legitimately have a batter that can hit at least twenty home runs in each part of the lineup. When you’re bottom three hitters are Rolen, Matsui, and Flores…then sheesh. I think this could possibly be the best team we have assembled, and yet wins will truly be hard to come by in the ultra competitive National League. This is one of the most stacked leagues I’ve ever seen since being here. The Cards, Giants, Marlins, Mariners, and Red Sox were all in the running…but I feel as if we have the best pitching and I think our hitting is catching up finally.
Worst Team: San Diego Padres (13-68)
Notes: There simply hasn’t been a worse team recently. They’ve lost (dating back to the Phillie days) the following games in recent seasons: 97, 118, 132, 94, 117,119, 108, and 143. Simply pathetic. They are on pace for 136 losses this season. I do think eventually there could be a turnaround, but I don’t see it with this current ghost GM. You gotta be active in a brutal National League if you want to have any type of chance at success here.
AL Best Farm System: Minnesota Twins (292 Points)
Notes: I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team with this many points with their farm system…292 points, wow! Quality hitting prospects throughout this organization with guys like Jorge Polanco, Gary Sanchez, Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, Jose Ramirez, and Ketel Marte. I don’t love the pitching side of things with Teheran and Worley, but that’ll get corrected soon with a great GM like Chris.
NL Best Farm System: San Diego Padres (110 Points)
Notes: You would think the Padres system would be even better considering how awful they’ve been, but they have some damn good quality prospects here. They have guys like Bryce Harper, Nolan Arenado, Andrew McCutchen, Corey Kluber, and Gerrit Cole. I like the mix here, and this is a core that can get you to be competitive realllllll quick. Let’s see how it shakes out in the coming years.
2010 HOFFBL Awards
AL MVP: 1B Miguel Cabrera (Tigers)
Notes: Miggy putting up ridiculous numbers once again. For my money, Matt Holliday was clearly in the mix, but I still gotta give the edge to Miggy who is hitting .375 while slugging .687. Just absurd stuff. He has accumulated 30+ doubles, 20+ home runs, and 80+ RBIs at the break. Can Matt Holliday make a 2nd half run to overtake Miguel Cabrera? Certainly plausible. I also like Holiday’s stealing ability. Just a total beast of a player. Going to be a fun race!
NL MVP: 3B Sean Burroughs (D’Backs)
Notes: The National League always seems to present a lousy field, but it seems that might be the case due to the immensely talented pitching staffs these batters gotta go through. Burroughs is the early pick, but as always, I will be shocked if he’s the guy that actually takes it home. Having said that, he is hitting .322 with 33 doubles and 17 dingers. He’s also been perfect on the bath paths going 8/8. Either way, I believe we will see another guy here, and my money will be that it’ll come from the Miami Marlins considering the talented batters they have and the ballpark they are playing in.
AL Cy Young: SP Josh Johnson (Blue Jays)
Notes: Josh Johnson leads the American League with a 1.20 ERA which is second best when you combine both leagues. He is 13-1 in his 17 starts and has completed eight of those games with four shutouts. Just dominant stuff. There are plenty of other good starting pitchers in the mix IF Josh Johnson slips up, but he is clear and away the front runner for this award at the moment. Truly an impressive season for him.
NL Cy Young: SP Rich Harden (Braves)
Notes: My guy Cole Hamels has truly been dominant this season, and then you look over and see Rich Harden’s numbers, and you simply go…wow. Harden is 17-1 in his first twenty starts and has an ERA of 1.02. That’s not a typo, folks. He’s having a season for the ages for this Atlanta Braves team which is saying something considering the terrific arms they’ve had pitching for them. What a damn run this guy is on. Will he slow down is the question.
AL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Grant Balfour (Houston Astros)
Notes: The Houston Astros are enjoying a nice surprise season and Balfour shutting the door at the rate he has been is one of the bigger reasons. Balfour has a 0.89 ERA and he has accumulated 21 saves during this current campaign. He has only blown one save thus far. He’s truly been terrific for the Astros.
NL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Jason Isringhausen (Cardinals)
Notes: Lots of good relievers, but Jason Isringhausen has really been unbelievable this year. He has accumulated 31 saves with a 1.44 ERA. He, like Balfour, has only one blown save on the year. The Cards are winning a lot of tight games, and right now you probably wouldn't want to have anyone else closing those games in the National league right this minute. Great season from Izzy.
