Philadelphia Phillies 2010 June Report
Record: 21-6
Home: 12-3
Road: 9-3
Positive Team Stat: BBs Allowed–125 (1st)
Notes: This Philadelphia Phillies pitching staff is picking right where they left off. They have continued to mow through hitters, and part of the reason they can do that is simply because they don’t offer many free passes. If you’re doing proper math at home, the Phillies pitching staff is issuing about 1.54 walks per game. Truly elite stuff. The Phillies also continue to lead the league in runs allowed and ERA. They are 3rd in opponents average and HRs allowed as well. This is the best pitching staff in all of baseball, and it’s going to be around for quite some time.
Negative Team Stat: HRs–90 (9th)
Notes: Hard to pick a negative, and I’m tired of picking batting average, BUT I think with the amount of sheer power on this roster, I’d expect to be in the top five. I know we are trending that way, but I just think we should’ve been towards the top from the beginning. We literally have a whole lineup that can hit the ball out of the ballpark with guys like: Kemp, Grandy, Matsui, Utley, Chooch, Hardy, Rolen, Flores, and Manny Ramirez…we expect to continue to climb on the offensive end. It’s good to see the offense catching up finally.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: C Carlos Ruiz
June Stats: .302/.348/.674/1.022 OPS 6 2Bs 1 3Bs 8 HRs 19 RBIs 21 Runs 5 BBs 8 Ks
Notes: Chooch is back babyyyyy! When Chooch starts hitting like the MVP caliber talent that he is, he can carry a team. Chooch had 15 extra base hits this month while accumulating 19 runs batted in as well as 21 runs scored. He is a huge difference maker at a premium position. Having a top tier catcher is a massive advantage here, and the Phillies are excited to be bringing Chooch back for another four seasons. He deserves the pay raise.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
June Stats: 5 Starts 4-1 0.87 ERA 41.1 IP 24Hs 4 ERs 9 BBs 28 Ks
Notes: Cole Hamels has simply been a Cy Young candidate this year, and frankly our best pitcher which says quite a bit on a staff like this. One that possesses a two-time NL Cy Young winner in Ben Sheets. Hamels was dominant from the outset of this month and even though he just started five games, he was just flat-out dominant. He didn’t strike out as many batters as he is capable of, but it made it even less stressful for him to get through each of his starts. Hamels is still only 26 years of age.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AA)
Notes: After a weird start to his minor league career, Hunter Renfroe is now taking off after getting playing time. Renfroe has already hit ten home runs, and he could still end up close to around 25-30 of them before season’s end. Renfroe was another late 1st round pick by the Phillies who is already looking like a steal. The Phillies have done really well drafting when they do have their pick.
