The American League's best player of the week was Toronto's Alex Gordon, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Alex went 10 for 27 (.370), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 11 RBI. His season numbers are: .238 AVG, 101 hits, 17 doubles, 4 triples and 27 longballs, along with 95 RBI and 79 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Russell Martin this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Russell was on fire, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 8 RBI.
Sunday 8/7/2010: Daisuke Matsuzaka (MIN) will miss full season
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 3rd inning of the game against Oakland, Matsuzaka complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Matsuzaka was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Disc Back. This season Matsuzaka compiled an ERA of 6.26, going 6-14 in 23 starts. He fanned 86 while giving up 181 hits in 141 innings.
Monday 8/1/2010: San Diego has no chance in a 1-hitter by Ubaldo Jimenez
MIAMI - Miami's right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Jimenez (12-6) fanned 6 and walked 5, throwing 120 pitches. The hitting star for Miami was designated hitter Corey Hart, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, going deep twice, scoring twice with 5 RBI. Miami scored 9 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 8/1/2010: Glaus and Butler win Player of the Week award
Troy Glaus from Texas wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .478 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.087 in 23 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Pittsburgh's Billy Butler this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 23 at bats he hit .435 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 16 game hitting streak right now. While compiling an on base percentage of .359, Billy hit .297 and slugged .477. He has collected 37 runs batted in this year.
Monday 8/1/2010: Pineiro (SEA) and Smith (SEA) win monthly pitcher award
Joel Pineiro couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 48 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 48 innings. His ERA in July was 0.89. This season Pineiro compiled an ERA of 1.74, going 17-3 in 21 starts. He fanned 159 while giving up 138 hits in 165.1 innings. He has 4 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! It's the 3rd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Seattle's pitcher Bud Smith. ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' shortstop Alex S. Gonzalez hurt himself in the 8th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Alex S. Gonzalez will miss at least 5-6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Alex S. has gone 72 for 251 (.287) this season, hitting 4 taters and driving in 31 runs. He has scored 27 runs on his own.
