PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's centerfielder Hideki Matsui joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 4th inning, Hideki drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Hideki collected 356 homeruns and 1266 RBI in 15 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
Monday 8/15/2010: Player of the Week honors go to Holliday and Villanueva
Matt Holliday wins his 9th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .522 and hit .474, while driving in 9 runs. Holliday has hit for a .340 average this season. He has 66 extra base hits along with 281 total bases, resulting in a .669 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 6th in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Carlos Villanueva this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.55 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 8/14/2010: Carlos Villanueva shuts out San Diego on 2 hits
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Carlos Villanueva is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Villanueva (19-5) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 101 pitches. Eric Chavez provided St. Louis with the offense Villanueva needed as he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling twice, and driving in 5 runs. St. Louis scored 15 runs on 18 hits.
Sunday 8/14/2010: Rich Harden pitches his 6th shutout of the season
MILWAUKEE - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander Rich Harden. Milwaukee found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. Jacoby Ellsbury spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he tripled with no outs in the 5th inning. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Harden (22-2) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 106 pitches. Carlos Lee helped Harden at the plate, he went 4 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 13-0.
Sunday 8/14/2010: Lyle Overbay on fire, hits for cycle
NEW YORK (A) - Minnesota's designated hitter Lyle Overbay accomplished a difficult feat in a game against New York (A), hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .266! A RBI double off Rocky Cherry in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Rocky Cherry in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 370 feet from home plate. A single in the 4th off Michael Tejera accounted for his 3rd hit. A single in the 6th off Michael Tejera accounted for his 4th hit. Hit number 5 followed in the 8th inning, a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Lyle scored one run, and he collected 4 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .259. He's now the 133rd player in league history to hit for the cycle! Carlos Febles was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/23/2009.
Thursday 8/11/2010: J.P. Howell (MIN) will miss full season
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's southpaw J.P. Howell experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 4th inning of the game against Los Angeles (A), Howell complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Ruptured Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. J.P. has a record of 3-1 this season, with an ERA of 3.20. In 64.2 Innings he was able to strike out 68 batters.
Wednesday 8/10/2010: Chase Headley (NYM) will miss 5 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s third baseman Chase Headley suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Milwaukee's Tom Wilhelmsen. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Headley will probaby miss 5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Hand. Surgery will be performed next week. Headley has hit 5 bombs this year while batting .253. He adds 19 doubles, along with 41 runs scored.
Monday 8/8/2010: Nate McLouth (OAK) will miss 5-6 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland's Nate McLouth suffered a serious injury Monday in a game against Minnesota. McLouth fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, McLouth was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Foot. This year McLouth drove in 26 and scored 41 runs while batting .203 with 5 taters.
