Philadelphia Phillies 2010 July Report
Record: 12-12
Home: 8-4
Road: 4-8
Positive Team Stat: BBs–384 (4th)
Notes: It’s pretty obvious by now that this Phillies pitching rotation is special, but let’s take a look at the offense and one of the things we are doing really well in. We are being patient at the plate which is an absolute must when you’re not hitting for a high average. We have six guys who have 40+ walks. They are the following: Scott Rolen, Manny Ramirez, J.J. Hardy, Matt Kemp, Hideki Matsui, and Chase Utley. Curtis Granderson is almost there with 38. These guys are being patient which is absolutely key. Now imagine if they can start hitting for a higher average during this stretch run?
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.250 (15th)
Notes: And by the same token, this must rise if we want to do anything meaningful. With an absolute battle coming down the stretch in the NL East, we just want to get in, but even if we do, then this is going to have to be better. We have way too many talented hitters, but it speaks to how incredibly stacked the national league is. I still believe in our overall talent, but man, we need our guys to start hitting to their capabilities. It’s still truly mind boggling when you are possessing a lineup of guys like Kemp, Grandy, Utley, Matsui, Hardy, Ruiz, Manny Ramirez, Flores, and Rolen. Just stacked, and yet the results for this offense have truly been a mixed bag all year long which has resulted in a month like this one.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 3B Scott Rolen
July Stats: .318/.371/.705/1.076 OPS 8 2Bs 1 3Bs 8 HRs 20 RBIs 19 Runs 5 BBs 15 Ks
Notes: Scotty Rolen is entering the last year of his deal, and with only two months left, the question remains…will he finish his career in red pinstripes? Seems like it’s becoming more unlikely by the day. Anyway, Rolen was outstanding this month as he provided 17 extra base hits, knocked in 20 guys, and scored 19 runs as well. He was just a great bat in what was a miserable month for mostly everyone else. Hoping AND praying the bats wake up soon enough.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
July Stats: 5 Starts 0-1 1.40 ERA 45 IP 26 Hs 7 ERs 0 BBs 42 Ks
Notes: It’s insane to think that a guy that didn’t win a single start could be the pitcher of the month on an elite team, but here we are in what was a really bizarre and tough month for the boys. Ben Sheets was quite simply magnificent, and yet couldn’t get enough run support to win one of his starts. Ben Sheets didn’t walk a single batter this month and only allowed 26 hits in his 45 innings of work. He also punched out 42 batters as well. He was just flat-out awesome. I’m certainly looking forward to Ben Sheets and Cole Hamels potentially in the playoffs dominating as they are so capable of doing on a nightly basis. The whole pitching staff was really good, but I felt like Sheets deserved his shine as our best pitcher this month.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: LF Brandon Guyer (AAA)
Notes: Brandon Guyer continues to be a guy that will eventually make it to the big leagues, but what kind of player will he be? At the end of the day, he does provide some versatility as he can play the corner outfield positions as well as 3rd base. With a little luck (PD), he can become even more of a player for this team as he progresses through the ranks.
