Thursday 9/1/2010: Toronto's Halladay earns Pitcher of the Month award
Roy Halladay couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 4-1 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.16. He struck out 27 in 46.2 innings. Roy pitched a shutout as well. Roy has a record of 11-11 this season, with an ERA of 2.36. In 205.2 Innings he was able to strike out 130 batters. Roy has pitched 3 shutouts and 5 complete games. Carlos Villanueva couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 50 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 50 innings. His ERA in August was 1.07. Carlos also fired a shutout. Carlos has a record of 22-5 this season, with an ERA of 1.79. In 246 Innings he was able to strike out 243 batters. He has 13 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 3rd in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Thursday 9/1/2010: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The American League's best player of the month was Seattle's Matt Holliday, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Matt was on fire, hitting .412 with 10 homeruns and 28 RBI. Holliday has hit for a .345 average this season. He has 77 extra base hits along with 322 total bases, resulting in a .687 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 4th in RBI! Curtis Granderson of Philadelphia wins his 3rd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Granderson helped his team with an average of .443 and 18 RBI in 106 at bats. His season features a batting average of .278 (141 hits in 508 AB), 27 doubles, 8 triples and 17 bombs. Granderson collected 57 RBI and 85 runs as well.
Wednesday 8/31/2010: Chuck James out for 5 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its left-hander Chuck James for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hunter Pence in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 36 starts this year Chuck struck out 220 batters in 249 innings of work. His ERA is 3.76, his record 9-15. He has 7 complete games and one shutout.
Wednesday 8/31/2010: Colby Lewis (MIN) will miss 9-10 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its right-hander Colby Lewis for at least 9-10 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to David Dellucci in a game against Toronto. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .336 against Colby this season. While posting an ERA of 6.52 he went 6-16 in 27 starts, fanning 143 and walking 18 hitters.
Monday 8/29/2010: Detroit's Jones wins Player of the Week award
Chipper Jones wins his 14th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Chipper went 14 for 29 (.483), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 7 RBI. His season features a batting average of .343 (150 hits in 437 AB), 32 doubles, 5 triples and 19 longballs. Jones collected 83 RBI and 87 runs as well. He's 3rd in the American League in batting! Matt Kemp from Philadelphia wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .484 and hit .407, while driving in 13 runs. Matt has gone 110 for 389 (.283) this season, hitting 23 homeruns and driving in 68 runs. He has scored 73 runs on his own.
Sunday 8/28/2010: Johan Santana shuts out Pittsburgh on 2 hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Great days are rare. But not for San Francisco's lefty Johan Santana. Pittsburgh found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Santana (14-9) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 113 pitches. Justin Upton provided San Francisco with the offense Santana needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. San Francisco improved its record to 83-48, scoring 2 runs on 12 hits.
Sunday 8/28/2010: Baltimore's Carl Crawford laces five hits
NEW YORK (A) - Carl Crawford is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Rocky Cherry. A 317 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Rocky Cherry in the 3rd inning. He collected singles in the 6th (one RBI) , in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Carl scored 2 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .286. Baltimore improved its record to 74-58, scoring 21 runs on 23 hits.
Saturday 8/27/2010: Matt Kemp pounds three dingers
MIAMI - Matt Kemp was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Philadelphia to a 5-2 win over Miami by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Ian Snell in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 406 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Ian Snell in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Dewon Brazelton in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 347 feet from home plate in left field. Overall he finished 3 for 5, with three runs scored with 3 RBI. Jack Cust was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/27/2010.
