Philadelphia Phillies 2010 September/October Report
Record: 21-7
Home: 13-3
Road: 8-4
Positive Team Stats #1: Pitching ERA/Runs Allowed–2.53/459 (1st)
Notes: This pitching staff has simply been the best in all of baseball which is a big reason why they have won so many games again. This is why they have won three consecutive 115+ win seasons which is certainly specia since only three other teams have accomplished the feat (Angels/Cubs/Giants)l. Can they make it a fourth consecutive season? That would truly be impressive. John Thomson was on the staff, but they decided to move on because of their payroll next year and the extensions of Matt Kemp and Carlos Ruiz kicking in. Gio Gonzalez, Ben Sheets (who had a down year mind you), Cole Hamels, and Chris Young were all simply incredible. Factor in the elite bullpen trio of Jose Veras, Mike Adams, and our closer Chad Cordero (arguably the best closer in the NL this year)...and this is the type of season you get. Special group of arms who will be around for another season of Phillies baseball. Looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish next year!
Positive Team Stats #2: BBs/HRs–566/202 (2nd/5th)
Notes: With such a great season, there was zero reason to lament on any negatives. The ability to preach patience while also being aggressive at the right moment can sometimes be a lost art…however, these Phillies have done a beautiful job with this as they have placed top 5 in both categories. The Phillies had seven players who walked at least 50+ times. They were the following: Scott Rolen, Manny Ramirez, Curtis Granderson, Hideki Matsui, J.J. Hardy, Matt Kemp, and Chase Utley. They also had seven hitters at least hit 20+ home runs…which were the following: Manny Ramirez, Curtis Granderson, Carlos Ruiz, Scott Rolen, J.J. Hardy, Matt Kemp, and Chase Utley. Absolutely impressive stuff! This lineup got off to a truly frustrating start, but boy did they ever get it going once they did. Looking forward to seeing how the bats look next year with Wilmer Flores continuing to take the next steps into superstardom.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
September/October Stats: .360/.395/.685/1.080 OPS 10 2Bs 4 3Bs 6 HRs 22 RBIs 22 Runs 6 BBs 9 Ks
Notes: Back to back months of brilliance from Curtis “The Grandy Man” Granderson. He was simply, once again, sensational. He had 20 extra base hits, drove in 22, and scored 22 times as well. He also can steal bases with the best of them. He is dynamite in every sense of the word. The Phillies have now slotted him into the two hole, and he really has found his place. He can hit for power when necessary, he can get on and steal a base and wreak havoc that way as well. He is just simply fantastic to watch day in and day out, and the Phillies are thrilled to have locked him up for a very long time in red pinstripes.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
September/October Stats: 6 Starts 5-1 1.84 ERA 44 IP 38 Hs 9 ERs 9 BBs 49 Ks
Notes: Gio Gonzalez simply has arrived in full. He started to show signs of his elite stuff last season for a mediocre team. This year he has put it all together for what has been the best pitching staff in baseball. Gio has completed his most innings pitched (242), struck out his most batters in a season (252), won his most games in a season (22), and also has completed his most games in a season as well (4). The Phillies believe he can be their best pitcher on the staff which is saying something when you have guys like Cole Hamels, Chris Young, and Ben Sheets on the pitching staff.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AA)
Notes: Our latest 1st round pick is off to an amazing start as he is our minor league player of the year. Renfroe didn’t get to camp right away, but once he got acclimated and played every day, he really took off. He hit .324 and slugged .589 in his 109 games. He also hit 27 home runs and added in 68 runs batted in (RBIs) as well as crossed home plate 66 times. A heck of a season for Mr. Renfroe, and the Phillies are excited to see him continue to grow into a player that will be able to display some serious pop down the line.
