Philadelphia Phillies 2010 Postseason Report
Record: 11-6
Home: 7-3
Road: 4-3
Offense: 66 Runs (3.88/Game)
Notes: Our offense would have some bad games, but then have some great games. When you look at the overall numbers, it wasn’t pretty as a whole (especially if you took Granderson out of the equation). I will say we did get some big time hits from Carlos Ruiz (seven extra base hits) and Matt Kemp (six home runs). Maybe the biggest unsung hero of them all was Jeff Bailey who had to play in center field because Matsui got injured late in the regular season. Bailey ended up playing ten games and hit .414 in the process. He really was fantastic for us, and something I definitely didn’t see coming. Based off the way Matsui hit this year in general and when he got back in the playoffs, I should’ve just kept Bailey in there!
Pitching: 58 Runs Allowed (3.26 ERA)
Notes: Our pitching has been the best since day one, and these guys really did get the job once again because frankly they had to with the offense being anemic at times. We really leaned on everyone during this championship run with Cole Hamels going down after his second start. Hamels was fantastic winning both of his starts, but got hurt late in that game four against the Giants. Luckily, we have an absolute embarrassment of riches with Gio Gonzalez chilling in the bullpen. Gio came in and was arguably our best pitcher of this run (more on him later). Chris Young was able to take home a critical game five against the Giants in the National league division series. Ben Sheets showcased some of his brilliance with some big time starts as he won the critical game seven start in the National league championship series against the soon to be named cy young winner Rich Harden. Gio Gonzalez was then able to close out the best offense Detroit Tigers to clinch a third title in five years. Truly special, and now can be officially considered a dynasty.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
Postseason Stats: .328/.413/.625/1.038 OPS 4 2Bs 0 3Bs 5 HRs 12 RBIs 12 Runs 8 BBs 3 Ks 5 SBs
Notes: Granderson’s performance in close out games was something else, mannnn. He had six hits with three of them via the long ball. He knocked in five runs while scoring three of his own (all from the long ball). He simply was our catalyst for much of the stretch run and during these playoffs. We simply wouldn’t be world champions without the grandy man. He had a rough first half when you look back at his season to the point I was so damn frustrated, but boy did he turn it around and truly got the offense going. We are hoping for more of the same next season!
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
Postseason Stats: 4 Starts 2-1 2.70 ERA 30 IP 18 Hs 9 ERs 6 BBs 28 Ks
Notes: This was such an interesting choice to make, but Gio Gonzalez really came into his own this season, and has arrived in full. We expect him to potentially be a Cy Young candidate for the next handful of years coming up. Gio wasn’t expected to be in the postseason rotation with Sheets, Young, and Hamels being so good and having the pedigree that they had in prior postseasons. When Hamels went down, we needed Gio to step up, and boy did he ever! He really had our best overall numbers, and while he may not have had as many starts as Young and Sheets, he really was better. We can’t wait to see Gio continue to ramp it up as he is one of the most complete pitchers in all of baseball. What a stud!
