What’s been going on in Colorado?
Well it all started in Spring 2010 when the new guy came to town. Braz aka the Brazilian Dude aka Rob was hired from the counter part professional basketball league where he was already working in Denver running the Nuggets. Due to his success in that league he received a nice financial package from Rockies ownership as well as a 10% ownership stake (that would increase with a world series and other performance incentives over the next decade) and so far the guy has been on a tear. He not only has shaken up the entire line up he has reinvented the culture. The Vibes are real in the Mile High and a sneak peak to the end of this story but payroll is up, interest is up and its time to party!
First things first when he took the team he realized that value on the market and the ways of building a team are very different. One of the initial observations was that loyalty is extremely important in trade value, sometimes even over skill. And that is because despite no salary cap, contracts still matter since you need to run your team wisely. At first glance it was clear the strength of my team was pitching so much so I later learned I have a top 5 rotation in the league. This was led by free agent’s Shaun Marcum and Francisco Liriano. It took me a little bit to realize how good Marcum was and by a little bit I mean a god damn long time (almost traded him twice) but now he is here to stay. The Colorado Rockies top prospect is also pitcher and future ace David Price. He struggled early on but we know he has what it takes to get it done at the big league level after being taken 5 overall in 07. Our hitters sucked but we did have Tulo, Manny and Helton.
Soon enough trades began and I relied on the advice of some peers to figure out what a fair deal was. That led me to shipping off my oldest players in Helton and Manny for picks only to later on acquire other old guys on waivers for free. Anyways it was nice to break the ice and shoot the shit with some old BBS GMs in these deals. I made constant changes week over week and ensured we were trying to be competitive. It was a huge learning curve in year 1 but we acquired some talent, improved the roster and had some fun along the way. We wanted to be a 500 team but it turned out we only had the juice to finish 3 games under. I was proud of these efforts. I might regret taking us out of the lotto for the draft in my first year but I wanted to get the fans going man. We got the interest up from 20s to 50 and they are about to see the highest payroll in Rockies history!
