Philadelphia Phillies 2011 Offseason Report
Verdict: We knew going in that Manny Ramirez was most likely just going to be a one year thing, but we needed to push every chip in to give us the best chance at a title. Manny helped deliver that goal, and for that we will always be forever grateful for his services. He is now entering the Hall of Fame after an unbelievable career. Truly a legend, and it was cool seeing him slug his 600th home run with our franchise.
Verdict: We will miss Scott Rolen and what he has brought to our club throughout the years. He was truly a well balanced player, and signing him in free agency kind of let teams know we were finally serious about getting back to our winning ways. Rolen was an elite defender who could hit for power as well as use his speed to wreak havoc. As much as it was smart to move on from him at age 35, it will also be painful to see him in another uniform. Scott Rolen will always be remembered as a true Phillie. Travis Harper was a guy we acquired from the Giants a longggggggg time ago, and he was almost the heart and soul of our bullpen because we always asked him to eat so many innings up there. He would even sometimes start here and there. He was truly a glue guy who had some really awesome years out of the pen for us. Another guy that’s going to be hard to replace.
Verdict: We made zero attempt to sign anybody. Our payroll was kinda set once we made our trades (more on that later) plus the guys coming back. We are trying to be as financially sound as we can while giving the boys the best shot at winning championships.
LF Brandon Guyer (AAA)
PHI 2011 2nd
Phillies Receive:
3B Endy Chavez
Verdict: Guyer has been a nice story, but let’s be real here…unless he gets some sort of PD, he is a bench guy at best right now. We also gave up our 2nd round pick from this past draft which was frankly an extremely weak draft class overall. Acquiring Endy Chavez was nice because 1) he makes very little ($1.75M over the next three seasons) and 2) he can kind of give us what Scott Rolen does without the power. I’d say we were smart about that move in a vacuum.
2012 1st Round Pick
LF Daniel Fields (AAA)
Phillies Receive:
RF Luke Scott
Verdict:
IN: RF Luke Scott and 3B Endy Chavez.
OUT: DH Manny Ramirez, 3B Scott Rolen, and MR Travis Harper. We also lost Brandon Guyer from the minors.
Verdict: All in all, I don’t necessarily think we got much better, but I think we did enough to really keep this juggernaut going. The reality is, this wouldn’t be possible if our guys didn’t re-sign cheap contracts with us. They seriously are what is keeping this thing going because we are extremely stacked, and yet we are able to make this work overall. I’m excited to see how this season transpires as it will be another bloodbath in the National League East division.
Good luck to all teams.
