Wednesday 5/17/2011: Kerry Wood pitches 1-hit shutout against Kansas City
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Kerry Wood is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. Wood (5-2) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 2, throwing 119 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' The hitting star for Baltimore was second baseman Jed Lowrie, he went 2 for 2, doubling once. Baltimore scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 5/16/2011: Player of the Week honors go to Morneau and Ruiz
Justin Morneau from Chicago (A) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Morneau helped his team with an average of .480 and 12 RBI in 25 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia's catcher Carlos Ruiz. He hit .571 with 7 RBI and slugged .952 in 21 at bats. He has hit 7 longballs while batting .356 this season. His 48 hits and 9 walks add up to a .400 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Saturday 5/13/2011: Ben Sheets quiets Milwaukee bats with shutout
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Ben Sheets is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Sheets 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 27th shutouts in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Sheets (6-1) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 67 of 101 pitches for strikes. J.J. Hardy provided Philadelphia with the offense Sheets needed as he finished 3 for 4, blasting a homerun, stroking a double. Philadelphia improved its record to 26-10, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.
Saturday 5/13/2011: Dustin Pedroia drills 5 hits
TEXAS - On Friday, Boston's second baseman Dustin Pedroia displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Texas, punishing their pitchers with five hits. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Daisuke Matsuzaka. Number 4 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 361 feet, cleared the wall in left field. A RBI double off Will Ohman in the 9th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected singles in the 4th inning and in the 5th . Dustin scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 53 hits in 156 at bats, resulting in a .340 batting average. Boston scored 12 runs on 17 hits.
Saturday 5/13/2011: Tike Redman collects 2000th hit against Seattle
SEATTLE - Detroit's leftfielder Tike Redman already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 2nd off John Lackey for number 2000. His best year so far was 2009 where he hit .337 with 18 homeruns and 110 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
Saturday 5/13/2011: Minnesota's Derek Jeter gets milestone hit
MINNESOTA - Derek Jeter got a standing ovation from 49169 fans in Minnesota, who witnessed his 3000th career hit. In 16 years of big league action so far, Derek has compiled a batting average of .305, along with 204 homeruns and 1277 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' His hit in the 9th inning was a single off Joel Zumaya. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Saturday 5/13/2011: Chicago (A)'s Aceves out for full season
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Alfredo Aceves experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 9th inning of the game against New York (A), Aceves complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.71 helped him to a 1-2 record this year. He struck out 7 and walked 1 in 17 innings.
Friday 5/12/2011: Ryan Rupe fires 2-hitter against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Atlanta's right-hander Ryan Rupe is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 25th time he has done it in his career. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Rupe (3-5) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 49 of 91 pitches for strikes. Argenis Reyes helped Rupe at the plate, he went 3 for 5, hitting a double, with three runs scored and driving in 2 runs. Atlanta improved its record to 20-16, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits.
Thursday 5/11/2011: Baltimore's Brantley out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's leftfielder Michael Brantley will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Baltimore and New York (A). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Brantley collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Brantley was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Back Muscle. Brantley has hit for a .303 average this season. He has 17 extra base hits along with 70 total bases, resulting in a .493 slugging percentage.
Wednesday 5/10/2011: Cole Hamels quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout
PHILADELPHIA - Cole Hamels took the mound and never left. And Pittsburgh hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 211 games started. Hamels (6-0) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 54 of 92 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Philadelphia was first baseman Wilmer Flores, he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.
