Philadelphia Phillies 2011 March/April Report
Record: 16-9
Home: 8-4
Road: 8-5
Positive Team Stat: HRs–36 (4th)
Notes: Our Phillies offense really carried us through a tough month. 16-9 is one of the worst months we’ve had during this run which really says quite a bit about how dominant this five year run has truly been. Back to the hitters where we saw great months from J.J. Hardy, Chooch, Wilmer Flores, and Matt Kemp. The scary thing is…this offense hasn’t hit their peak yet. We worried about losing guys like Scott Rolen and Manny Ramirez, but I think we’ve done a good job replacing those guys…but Luke Scott and Endy Chavez need to start showing it.
Negative Team Stat: HRs Allowed—28 (17th)
Notes: The reality is as many home runs as we hit, we nearly gave up just as many…crazy. Absolutely crazy. This is so unlike our boys where we are almost always guaranteed to be in that top three mix for allowing the fewest home runs in a season. Much of the struggles did come from Rich Hill who was so solid for us this past season, but man has he really struggled to find it to the point where our Phillies are looking to possibly find a replacement for him.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
Postseason Stats: .302/.352/.615/.967 OPS 9 2Bs 0 3Bs 7 HRs 18 RBIs 18 Runs 8 BBs 10 Ks
Notes: About damn time! J.J. Hardy really has owed us more if we are being honest. This was an excellent start as he just gave us one of his most complete months of his career. He hit 16 extra base hits while his OPS was close to a 1.000. He has that ability, and we need him to be the MVP he truly is capable of being here. High hopes for Hardy to keep this thing rolling into a monster season!
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
Postseason Stats: 5 Starts 5-0 1.82 ERA 39.2 IP 25 Hs 8 ERs 4 BBs 43 Ks
Notes: King Cole! This man is something else these days. He truly has blossomed into one of our best pitchers. The scary thing is…Ben Sheets is back to his Cy Young form. We have Chris Young and Gio Gonzalez doing their thing, too. Scary rotation…the envy of most teams. Anyway, Hamels was dynamite as his ERA was under two, racked up more strikeouts than innings pitched, and his WHIP was well under one. His stuff was truly electric!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias
Notes: This man is hitting over .400, and scouts believe he can hit for a high average eventually in the big leagues. Time will tell on that one, but at the very worst, he will be a utility type guy within the infield, and that will certainly be useful when looking for cheap, cost-controlled guys.
