Thursday 6/1/2011: Toronto's Johnson earns Pitcher of the Month award
The best month of May in the American League certainly had Toronto's left-hander Josh Johnson, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He had an ERA of just 0.93 in 48.1 innings of work in which he struck out 42 hitters. His record in May is 5-0. In 11 starts this year Josh struck out 80 batters in 86 innings of work. His ERA is 0.94, his record 9-0. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Chuck James couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the southpaw Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 1.06 helped him to a 5-0 record in May. He worked 51 innings, striking out 40 hitters while walking 11. Chuck got two complete game shutouts as well! Thursday 6/1/2011: Detroit's Redman earns Batter of the Month award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Detroit's leftfielder Tike Redman. Tike pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .430 with 6 and 30 RBI while slugging .620. Tike is hitting .416 this year, with 91 hits in 219 at bats. He has driven in 46 runs, slugging .575. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! Philadelphia's shortstop J.J. Hardy had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .446 and hit .423, while driving in 30 runs. J.J. has gone 70 for 193 (.363) this season, hitting 13 homeruns and driving in 48 runs. He has scored 39 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Wednesday 5/31/2011: Roy Halladay fires 1-hitter against Colorado
COLORADO - Toronto's right-hander Roy Halladay is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Colorado on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Halladay (8-1) fanned 2 and walked none, throwing 101 pitches. Anthony Rizzo provided Toronto with the offense Halladay needed as he collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Toronto scored 8 runs on 17 hits.
Tuesday 5/30/2011: Zimmerman and Rolen win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Ryan Zimmerman, Cleveland's starting third baseman. Ryan went 13 for 28 (.464), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. His season features a batting average of .268 (51 hits in 190 AB), 11 doubles, no triples and 9 taters. CLEVELAND - On Saturday, Cleveland's leftfielder Adam Dunn displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Cincinnati, punishing their pitchers with six hits. In the 7th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Bobby Keppel. His 6th hit, a two-run homerun off Bobby Keppel in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left field.
