Philadelphia Phillies 2011 May Report
Record: 24-3
Home: 12-0
Road: 12-3
Positive Team Stat: Runs Scored–329 (3rd)
Notes: What a damn month, and frankly this offense has just been on fire for the first two months which is weird because we usually start off slow, and then catch fire at the end. Hopefully we just stay this way for the entire season and remain relatively healthy for most of it. J.J. Hardy, Carlos Ruiz (both guys coming from the Cubs organization a few years back), and Matt Kemp have simply been MVP candidates in the early portion of the season. All three are hovering around an OPS of over a 1.000. Truly impressive seasons from these guys. Just imagine when Curtis Granderson gets it rolling…then things truly get scary. Fun offensive group.
Negative Team Stat: ERA—3.29 (9th)
Notes: It’s weird to be a tad upset about a 3.29 ERA and being the 9th ranked team, but the expectation in Philadelphia is to have the best pitching staff. We simply haven’t done that through two months, but Rich Hill’s disastrous first month really hurt this grouping in the early goings. Mike Adams also had a disastrous outing back on April 25th against the Colorado Rockies which really hurt his overall ERA. I think this pitching staff will ascend into a top 3-5 finish…especially once we get down to a 4-man rotation towards the end of the regular season.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
Postseason Stats: .423/.446/.670/1.117 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 6 HRs 30 RBIs 21 Runs 8 BBs 12 Ks
Notes: What more can you say about J.J. Hardy who did have some really stiff competition with the likes of Carlos Ruiz and Matt Kemp who both had incredible months, too. However, it’s hard to ignore a batter who hit over .420 while also driving in 30 runs and scoring 21 himself. That is just extremely impressive. J.J. Hardy is making a strong case for the National League Most Valuable Player, and if he keeps it going, he will have one heck of a chance to win it.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
Postseason Stats: 6 Starts 6-0 1.59 ERA 51 IP 29 Hs 9 ERs 5 BBs 47 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets is BACK, baby! He started six games and won all six starts. He was simply dominant, and really did limit his base runners. It seemed like he had an off season a year ago, and even then he still finished with a 2.69 ERA. He’s back to being under a two ERA this season which bodes well for our Philadelphia Phillies. Not so good news for the other teams if he’s back to being the dominant Cy Young winner of seasons past!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AAA)
Notes: When you are hitting nearly .350 while also slugging nearly .640, then yeah you’re probably deserving of the shoutout. Hunter Renfroe is showing really good signs of becoming a piece down the line. He has also hit 19 doubles with 15 dingers. Truly impressive power numbers for just a teenager. This looks like another pick the Phillies have hit on late in the 1st round. He most likely won’t be ready next season, but the following season he should absolutely be ready to shine.
