Philadelphia Phillies 2011 June Report
Record: 15-13
Home: 8-7
Road: 7-6
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs/Runs Scored–109/481 (2nd)
Notes: This offense has frankly been outstanding thus far. Wilmer Flores has taken the next step and is slowly becoming a superstar hitter. Granderson bounced back in a big way this past month, and yet still couldn’t dethrone J.J. Hardy (more on him later). Chooch is one of the true premier hitting catchers in the game today. Matt Kemp is still producing despite not hitting for a better average. Imagine if Chase Utley could get the bat going? He has had a rough first half of the season.
Negative Team Stat: ERA—3.32 (10th)
Notes: We actually dropped a spot from a month ago. That’s not great, and it doesn’t help that Chris Young is now on the mend due to a ruptured elbow ligament. We will need him back ASAP considering he has been probably our second best starting pitcher this year. Gio Gonzalez really blossomed into a big time pitcher this past season, but it seems like he’s regressed slightly this year. I need him to be that dude, and hopefully he’ll get it going in dominant fashion soon enough. Cole Hamels has had his moments, but he’s roughly been great as always. Ben Sheets is leading the staff once again, but man it’s not ideal to see these boys struggling…which is funny to say when a pitching staff is roughly around the top 10 area in all major cats, and yet it’s a far cry from what we are used to…the standard of greatness.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
June Stats: .347/.422/.592/1.014 OPS 8 2Bs 2 3Bs 4 HRs 22 RBIs 16 Runs 15 BBs 14 Ks
Notes: What more can you say? J.J. Hardy has now taken all batter of the month awards for our squad. He has simply been fabulous out of the three-hole. He’s by far our best overall hitter, and again is making a case to be the National League MVP if he keeps it up. This month he had just 14 extra-base hits with eight of those being doubles. He drove in 22 runs while also scoring 16 himself. He plays strong defense as well. Just an absolute stud.
Best Pitcher: SP Chris Young
June Stats: 4 Starts 2-1 1.48 ERA 30.1 IP 17 Hs 5 ERs 7 BBs 28 Ks
Notes: Chris Young was simply mowing down hitters until he got injured. He was absolutely our best pitcher of the month still…even with that injury. He is roughly going to miss the entire month of July, but it’ll be full systems go once he gets back from injury. Young was simply unhittable this month as he only gave up five earned runs in his nearly 31 innings pitched. The Phillies can’t wait to get him back!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: LF Kevin Pillar (AA)
Notes: Kevin Pillar has recently just got drafted, and in his first year of Double A ball, I’d say he’s doing quite well. He still has quite a bit of work to do, but the hope is down the road he can at least develop into a nice bench piece. With .836 OPS during his first 82 games of work, this has been a nice start to his professional baseball career. Let’s see if Pillar can continue to improve, and be a future Philadelphia Phillie!
